IMPORTANT  DAYS
2 November: International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

i. The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists was observed globally on 2 November 2016. The Day is celebrated to spread awareness against the violence and crimes done to journalists and media workers and to bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies.
ii. It aims to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference. Over the past decade, more than 800 journalists have been killed for bringing news and information to the public. However, only one in ten cases committed against media workers over the past decade has led to a conviction.
State-wise Ease of Doing Business rankings released

i.Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman on 31 October 2016 released State-wise Ease of Doing Business rankings in New Delhi. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have topped the list in the Ease of Doing Business rankings.
ii.The rankings are on the basis of 340-point Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP) for States/UTs 2015-16 and their implementation by the States. BRAP covers the period from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016. It includes recommendations for reforms on 58 regulatory processes, policies, practices or procedures spread across 10 reform areas spanning the lifecycle of a typical business.
iii.Andhra Pradesh and Telengana topped the all-India ranking with 98.78 per cent each, followed by Gujarat with 98.21 per cent, Chhattisgarh with 97.32 per cent and Madhya Pradesh with 97.01 per cent. Gujarat has slipped to third position from the first rank of 2015.
Modi launches Asia's largest jungle safari in Chhattisgarh

i. PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated Asia's largest man-made jungle safari, a nearly 800-acre Nandanvan Zoo and Safari, at Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh. Modi was seen clicking photographs of a tiger, during his visit to mark Chhattisgarh's 16th foundation day celebrations. He will launch the 'Saur Sujala Yojana,' which aims to provide solar pumps to 51,000 farmers in the state.
Odisha: Rs 5 thousand 436 crore loan disbursed under PMMY

i. In Odisha, banks operating in the state have disbursed loans to the tune of 5 thousand 436 crore to 23 lakh 43 thousand beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana in 2015-16.  Reviewing on the progress of implementation of the MUDRA scheme with heads of banks in Bhubaneswar last evening, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, the target has been fixed at 7 thousand 203 crore rupees in the current fiscal. He said, out of this about 40 percent have been disbursed in the first two quarters.
ii. Mr. Pradhan called upon the Banks to raise the flow of credit to poor, youth and women entrepreneurs in backward area of the State from the present level of 35 per cent to at least 45 per cent in the current financial year. The minister advised the heads of the bank to create their own Odia portal to make the poor and small entrepreneurs from MSME sector aware of MUDRA schemes.
PM chairs high level meeting on reducing dependency on import of oil and gas
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a high level meeting on the roadmap to reduce dependency on import of oil and gas. During the meeting, Petroleum Ministry presented strategies for achieving the objective, such as increasing production of crude oil and gas, promoting biofuels and renewables, energy efficiency and conservation.
ii. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya, Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha, and senior officials from Prime Minister's Office, Petroleum Ministry, External Affairs Ministry, Home Ministry, Finance Ministry, Defence Ministry were present in the meeting.
Kerala to launch 'tea museum' next month
i. A 995-acre tea plantation in Kerala, which features a tea museum and a tea factory, is set to open next month. The Priyadarshini Tea Environs will give its guests a chance to witness the various stages of tea production. Further, it will offer adventure tourism activities like trekking and biking.


Kerala becomes open defecation free state
i. Kerala has become the third Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in the country. The announcement was made on the state’s foundation day today. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim had declared themselves Open Defecation Free.
ii. “Kerala has become an ODF state today,” Drinking Water and Sanitation Secretary Parameswaran Iyer said. He said over 1 lakh villages across the country have become ODF. iii.“Kerala becomes first high density populated state in the country to achieve Open Defecation Free status today on its formation day,” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a tweet. Meanwhile, a source said three more states — Gujarat, Haryana and Uttarakhand — will be announcing themselves as ODF soon.
PM Narendra Modi launches 'Saur Sujala Yojana' in Chhattisgarh
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Saur Sujala Yojana in Chhattisgarh that would provide solar powered irrigation pumps to farmers at a subsidized price. ii.Chhattisgarh would be the first state to implement the scheme. Under the scheme, solar powered irrigation pumps of 3HP and 5HP capacity worth Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh respectively would be distributed to the farmers by March 31, 2019. The beneficiaries would get the pumps at the subsidised price.

TTD approves Rs. 188 crore development works for Tirupati
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, TTD board of trustees approved various works worth 188 crore rupees for the development of the Tirupati town. Talking to media persons yesterday, TTD Chairman Chadalawada Krishnamurthy said, the board has approved works which mostly relate to civil worth 184 crore rupees and electrical of 4 crore rupees.
These include those already executed as well as under progress and those yet to be taken up very shortly. He said, besides sanctioning approval for several other developmental works, the board also gave its nod for the grand conduct of the eight phase of the prestigious Mana Gudi programme on November 14 - on the auspicious Karthika Pournami in both the Telugu speaking States and also sanctioned 66.93 lakh rupees for the same.

Australia, Indonesia consider joint patrols in S China sea
Australia is considering joint naval patrols with Indonesia in the disputed South China Sea, Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop said on Tuesday. Bishop added that the patrols are "consistent with our policies of exercising our right of freedom of navigation". This comes after China criticised Australia for running surveillance flights over disputed islands in the South China Sea.
China unveils J-20 stealth jet fighters
China on Tuesday unveiled its J-20 stealth fighter jets at 'Airshow China', the country's biggest expo of plane makers and buyers. The radar-evading jets which did a 60-second flypast are reportedly seen as "a big step forward in Chinese combat capability". China also put up the AG600, the largest amphibious plane in production, on display
Australia announces 19 grants worth $6.3 million for projects with India
In a bid to boost ties with India, the Australian government on 02nd November 2016 has announced 19 grants worth $6,30,000 dollars for several projects in the field of education, science, sports, arts and culture. The successful grants include an exchange between TAFE NSW and India's Centurion University to share expertise for training indigenous learners, collaboration between University of New South Wales and Indian scientists to develop effective new water purification systems for the country's water supply.

SEBI tightens norms for credit rating agencies
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 01st November 2016 tightened rules for credit rating agencies, prescribing more disclosures on suspension and withdrawal of ratings. The capital markets regulator also directed agencies to disclose the nature of their compensation arrangements with rated entities, including exchange of gifts. CRISIL, ICRA and CARE are the major agencies that assign credit ratings to issuers of debt instruments. The SEBI move follows an increase in the number of defaults due to a deteriorating corporate debt profile.

India's gross-value added growth to hit 7.6% this yr: DBS
India's gross value added growth is expected to reach 7.6 per cent this year from 7.2 per cent last year. While private sector activity remains subdued, high frequency fiscal numbers point to sustained support from public capex spending, a report by global financial services major, DBS said.
According to DBS, after an upside surprise from China, India manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, PMIs also jumped in October, affirming signs of a cyclical upturn in the region.  Regarding inflation, the report said that price pressures meanwhile are under watch with the headroom for monetary easing likely to narrow going into next year.

MoU signed for enabling online submission of applications under PMAY
Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Common Services Centre SPV of Ministry of Information Technology today signed Memorandum of Understanding, MoU for enabling online submission of applications under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana(Urban).  The MoU was signed in the presence of Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister for IT Ravi Shankar Prasad.
It will enables online submission of applications by the urban poor for affordable houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana(Urban). About 60 thousand Common Services Centres located in urban areas will enable online submission from tomorrow at a nominal cost of 25 rupees per application.

Rishi Jaitly, Twitter's India head, resigns
Twitter India Head Rishi Jaitly on 1 November 2016 resigned from the company. He made the announcement on his twitter handle.Jaitly, who formerly worked at Google India, had joined Twitter in November 2012 to lead the microblogging giant's expansion to India.
In 2014, Jaitly took on additional responsibility as Twitter’s Market Director for India and South East Asia, leading the company’s growth and media partnerships across SE Asia. Prior to joining Twitter, Jaitly worked at Knight Foundation as Program Director. However, he is better known for his stint as the head of Public-Private Partnerships at Google India.
Indian hockey coach Oltmans' contract extended till 2020
Hockey India has renewed men's team coach Roelant Oltmans' contract till 2020 after he led the team to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy final in which India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan. Oltmans, whose contract was set to expire in 2017, said that the extension provides a perfect opportunity to make India a regular contender for medals at the global stage.
Arnab Goswami resigns as Times Now Editor-in-Chief
Arnab Goswami, the renowned television journalist known for his live debate ‘The Newshour’, resigned as the Editor-in-Chief of Times Now and ET Now on Tuesday. Goswami said that he would not be quitting television media or the news industry adding, “The game has just begun.” Goswami announced his decision to quit and start his own venture in an editorial meet.
PM Modi felicitates Deepa Malik with ₹4 cr cash reward
PM Narendra Modi felicitated Rio Paralympics silver medalist Deepa Malik with a ₹4 crore cash reward in Gurugram on Tuesday. Malik was the first Indian woman athlete to win a Paralympics medal in Rio, winning a silver in the women's shot put event. The felicitation event was attended by Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

NHPC commissions 50 MW wind power project in Rajasthan
State-run NHPC has announced commissioning of a 50 MW wind power project in Rajasthan. NHPC has commissioned its 50 MW wind power project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The project consist of 25 nos wind turbine generators each of 2 MW capacity, which has been successfully synchronised with grid in October 2016.

Portugal hosts 5th barrel oriented surfing competition
The 5th annual Allianz Perfect Chapter, which is an original one-day barrel oriented surfing competition, took place in Nazaré, Portugal on Monday. World's 16 best tube riders competed for the €20,000 (₹14 lakh) prize money. United States' Balaram Stack finished second while the competition was won by Basque's Aritz Aranburu.
Dhoni most valued athlete among Indians, Federer globally: Forbes Fab 40
Team India’s limited-overs cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni remains the most valued Indian athlete in 2016, despite a drop in his brand value when compared with last year, shows the Forbes Fab 40 list released recently.The annual Forbes Fab 40 list, which estimates the brand value of top sports labels, athletes, teams and events, reveals that Dhoni’s brand value reduced from $21 million in 2015 to $11 million this year, and his rank slipped from fifth to 10th during the same period. However, he remains the only Indian among the top 10 athletes globally.
Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer toppled golf great Tiger Woods as the most valued athlete globally. With a brand value of $36 million, Federer gained two notches from third last year, while Woods dropped four spots to stand fifth on the latest edition of the list. Among other top athletes on the list is Argentine football star Lionel Messi, ranked eighth. He was not among the top 10 last year.
India's Palpreet Singh Included in 2016 NBA D-League Draft
Palpreet Singh, winner of National Finals of ACG-NBA Jump, India's first national basketball talent search program, was selected 11th in the fourth Round of the NBA D-League Draft held in New York. Satnam Singh, who became the first Indian to be drafted into the NBA when he was selected 52nd overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA Draft, represents the Texas Legends, the minor league affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks.
