Foldable paper bike helmet wins James Dyson design award

  • EcoHelmet', a foldable paper bike helmet, created by New York-based Isis Shiffer, has won the James Dyson design award 2016. 
  • Shiffer came up with the idea when she started using bike-hire schemes and realised it required people to bring their own helmets which were expensive. 
  • The recyclable 'EcoHelmet' is expected to cost around $5 (approximately Rs. 340)

Man who inspired '3 Idiots' wins global innovation award

  • Ladakh-based engineer, Sonam Wangchuk, on whom Aamir Khan's character 'Phunsukh Wangdu' was based in the film '3 Idiots', was awarded the 'Rolex Awards for Enterprise 2016' for his 'Ice Stupas' project.
  • The project aimed at reducing water shortage in high altitudes, the project, which will be supported by the Rolex fund, involves conical ice mounds designed like mini-glaciers to slowly release water.

Denver becomes 1st US city to legalise social marijuana use

  • The people of Denver, US have passed a ballot initiative, allowing private businesses like clubs, bars and restaurants to apply for permits allowing marijuana consumption within their premises. 
  • Denver had already legalised recreational marijuana use, but public consumption was illegal until now. 
  • This comes after the US states California, Massachusetts, and Nevada legalised recreational marijuana use.

NASA astronaut set to become the oldest woman in space

  • NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, at an age of 56 years, will become the oldest woman in space history after she takes off for the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday. 
  • Notably, Whitson, who holds the record for most time spent in space by a woman, is also the first woman to become ISS commander. 
  • This will be Whitson's third spaceflight.

Telangana signs MoU with Microsoft for digital services

  • Telangana government signed a MoU with Microsoft Corporation India for helping the government explore cloud, machine learning and mobile-based solutions to improve citizen services, education, healthcare and agriculture. 
  • "Telangana government believes that ICT is the key to building not only a stronger economy but also an efficient and effective governance system," officials said.

Manuel Medrano wins best new artist at Latin Grammy Awards

  • Colombian singer Manuel Medrano and Puerto Rican artist Yandel each won two Latin Grammy Awards Thursday during a ceremony that began with a strong message in defence of Latinos. 
  • Actor-director Diego Luna, who presented the song of the year award to the composers of "La Bicicleta," urged unity among Latinos.

SpiceJet receives World Travel Leaders Award at WTM, London

  • SpiceJet received the World Travel Leaders award at the WTM (World Travel Mart) Awards in London on 7th November 2016. 
  • The airline was recognised for its dramatic turnaround and its use of innovation to rebuild customer loyalty. SpiceJet was the only airline to be recognised this year, globally. 
  • The award was received by Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet.

  • Made in India cars have once again made it to international grounds. 
  • This time it's the 2016 Next Green Car Awards UK. Yes, the nominations are out for this award and two India-made cars have appeared on this list.

Livingstone school bags National Science Project Award

  • Livingstone Foundation-Hr. Sec. School (LFHSS) Dimapur has won the Best Science Project Award at the first ever National Science Concours of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT). 
  • The event organized to mark the UNESCO initiative of observing the World Science Day for Peace & Development 2016 (Nov 10), was held at SMIT Campus in Majitar, East Sikkim from November 10-11 with the Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, Brig. (Dr.) Somnath Mishra was the Chief Guest.

  • TANPREET Parmar of Vancouver was crowned Miss India-Canada 2016 at the 26thannual Miss India-Canada event in Toronto 
  • Tanpreet is a Canadian actress, model, talk show host and mentor. She was crowned Miss Charity British Columbia2014-2015 and awarded “People’s Choice” at the Miss BC Pageant. Tanpreet was recognized for raising the most money for the Canadian Cancer Society
