Let's try to understand this with some examples

proceed (verb) = to continue doing something that has already been started.
- pro - Prefix = forward
- ceed (cedere) - Root = go
purpose (noun) = the intention, aim or function of something
- pur (pro) - Prefix = forward
- pose (ponere) - Root = put
