Day 56 : Pre

  • Pre - before;in advance
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • prevent (verb) = to stop somebody from doing something
    • pre (prae) - Prefix = before
    • vent - Root = come
  • predict (verb) = to say that something will happen in the future
    • pre - Prefix = before
    • dict (dicere) - Root = say
Let's have a look at some more words with prefixes, for better understanding.
  • Preview - see ‘before’
  • Precede - to go before
  • Preamble - an introduction
  • Precaution - care taken beforehand
  • Precedent - something similar which happened before
  • Precipitate - to act hurriedly; to throw headlong
  • Precise - cut ‘before’
  • Precocious - having ripened very early; as, a precocious child
  • Predecessor - one who preceded another in office
  • Predict - say ‘before’
  • Preeminent - supreme; above all others; as, a preeminent speaker
  • Prefer - carry ‘before’ others
  • Prejudice - judge ‘before’
  • Prelude - a musical or dramatic introduction
  • Premonition - a forewarning; an omen
  • Preoccupied - already occupied; very busy
  • Preparatory - introductory; as, a preparatory school
  • Prepare - get ready ‘before’
  • Presage - to predict; prophesy
  • Preserve - to keep secure from injury
  • Preside - to occupy the leading place; as, preside at a meeting
  • President - leader who sits ‘before’ all others
  • Presume - to take to onself a right before it has been granted
  • Pretender - one who makes a claim; as, a pretender to a throne
  • Prevent - come ‘before’
  • Prevention - the act of intervening before trouble; as, prevention of crime
