1. 15th October : International Day of Rural Women

  • The International Day of Rural Women is observed across the world on 15th October to recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women.
  • The theme of 2016 is  “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”.
  • The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on 15th October 2008.
  • The new international day, established by the General Assembly in its resolution 62/136 of 18 December 2007

2. World Student Day observed today

  • As a mark of respect to the former President (11th)and ‘Missile Man’ of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary,United Nations  has declared his birthday as ‘World Students Day’.
  •  15th October is Dr. Kalam’s birth anniversary is celebrated as a day for students all around the world.

3. Indian Scientist Gaikwad bags young scientist award in US

  • An Indian scientist Kirtiraj Kundlik Gaikwad has been awarded the prestigious IAFP Young scientist scholarship award 2016 for his research work on a development of novel oxygen absorbing package in the field of active packaging for oxygen sensitive food products.
  • The award worth (2000 US $)and an award plaque has been presented to him in the annual meeting of International Association Of Food Protection (IAFP) held in St Louise, USA.
  • Kirtiraj Kundlik Gaikwad is food packaging researcher.

4. 17th India-Russia Annual Summit to be held in Goa

  • Today, the 17th India-Russia Annual Summit will be held in Goa
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will review the entire gamut of India-Russia relations during their bilateral talks.
  • The focus will be on defense and nuclear cooperation with terrorism being a key issue.
  • Both countries are likely to sign a multi-billion deal for the S-400 Triumf long-range air defense missile systems.

5. PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Shaurya Smarak in Bhopal

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi unveiled the war memorial ‘Shaurya Smarak’, at Bhopal, in Madhya Pradesh on October, 14, 2016. The Governor of Gujrat and Madhya Pradesh, Shri O.P. Kohli, the Union Minister for Defence, Shri Manohar Parrikar, the Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other dignitaries are also seen.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the war memorial ‘Shaurya Smarak‘ in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The ‘Shaurya Smarak‘ has been constructed by the state government in honor of those who laid down their lives for the country.
  • The Smarak built over an area of 12.67 acres of land and was developed at an expense of 41 crore rupees includes a 62-foot “Shaurya Stambh”.
  • Various stages of life, war, death and victory over death have been displayed here.
  • The memorial is the first-of-its-kind and unique Shourya Smarak in the country.

6. Union Govt. to use postal network for distribution of subsidized pulses

  • The Union Government has decided to use the Postal network for distribution of subsidized pulses.
  • The decision was taken in the Inter-Ministerial Committee on prices of essential commodities headed by Union Consumer Affairs Secretary, Hem Pande in New Delhi.
  • The committee reviewed availability and prices of essential commodities specially pulses and suggested that in the absence of government outlets in the states, postal networks should be used for the distribution.

7. Smriti Irani inaugurates India International Silk Fair in New Delhi

  • Textiles Minister Smriti Irani  has inaugurated the India International Silk Fair in New Delhi.
  • The fair will promote production and marketing silk across the country.
  • The fair is with the objective of providing the opportunity to small and medium entrepreneurs to showcase their unique products to the visiting overseas buyers.
  • The fair will provide a unique opportunity for exporters to display products and for overseas buyers a place to source their merchandize.
  • India is the second largest producer of Silk in the world.

8. Odisha celebrates Kumar Purnima festival

  • odishaToday, Odia households are celebrating the Kumar Purnima festival.
  • The festival is significant to unmarried girls, who wear new clothes and chant prayers to the Sun and the moon gods to get a good life partner.
  • On the occasion, a traditional game called Puchi is played by the residents in the rural areas and many villages conduct mock marriages of children called Kumari Bibaha.

9. Cadaver skin transplantation performed at JIPMER

  • Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Puducherry has performed skin transplant harvesting skin from a brain dead patient.
  • This is the first time such a transplant done in a government hospital in the country.
  • The skin taken from the dead patient is transplanted to a person with burn injuries and another patient with a chronic nonhealing wound.
  • JIPMER is among the few hospitals in the country to have license from the Government of India for Cadaveric Tissue Transplant.

10. DMRC launches free Wi-Fi on Airport Express Line

  • Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director Dr. Mangu Singh has launched free Wi-Fi facilities at Metro stations on its Airport Express Line (22.7 Kilometer).
  • Now, Commuter will be able to avail free wifi services by logging onto ‘Oui DMRC Free Wifi‘ and access internet applications like email, Facebook, Google, video chat as well as live streaming of cricket and football matches etc inside the station premises.
  • Earlier, wifi facility was launched on Yellow Line’s Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat and Hauz Khas stations in association with Rail Tel Corporation.
