OCT 17: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
I. The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17 each year since 1993. This year theme is Moving from humiliation and exclusion to participation: Ending poverty in all its forms. 2016 theme of the day highlights how important it is to recognize and address the humiliation and exclusion endured by many people living in poverty.
UP cabinet approves construction of Intl theme park at Ayodhya
In Uttar Pradesh, the cabinet approved the construction of an International theme park at Ayodhya. In another decision, the Madarsa teachers will now get an enhanced honorarium of fifteen thousand in place of eight thousands which was given to them till now. The decision was approved by the cabinet meeting which was chaired by CM AkhileshYadav in Lucknow today.
he world class theme Park at Ayodhya will be built in the International Ramlila Centre to develop Ayodhya as a top tourist destination​. CM AkhileshYadav had earlier sanctioned the construction of amphitheater and BhajanSandhyaSthal in the temple town with 15 crore Rupees in August 2016.

All towns in MP to be open defecation free by Dec 2017: ShivrajChouhan
In Madhya Pradesh, all the towns will become Open Defecation Free by December 2017. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made this announcement at a workshop on urban development in Bhopal today.
He said that the state government will launch a Nagar UdayAbhiyaan on the occasion of birthday of former prime minister AtalBihari Vajpayee from 25th December this year. The work on all the projects will be done in a Mission Mode during this campaign, which will last till 26th January 2017.

HP: Police celebrates Cyber Crime awareness week from today
In Himachal Pradesh, the police is celebrating Cyber Crime awareness week from today. The C-DAC an institution of Department of Electronics & Information Technology under the Ministry of Communication & Information Technology is helping the police. State Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar told that several awareness programmes have been planned during this week.
According to D. K. Jain, the Director of C-DEC, the Government of India wants to secure every person in cyber-crime.

Andhra govt sets GVA target for horticulture sector at Rs 49,845 cr
Andhra Pradesh government for 2016-17 has set the Gross Value Addition (GVA) target for the horticulture sector at Rs.49,845crore. The government wants to take the contribution of horticulture to GVA to 25 per cent with the focus on replacing the less remunerative field crops with the likes of mango, sweet orange, acid lime, banana, papaya, pomegranate, guava, oil palm, cocoa, apple berry, Thai guava, and dragon fruit.

Patna railway station tops in Wi-Fi use, mostly for porn
Patna railway station topped the chart in the country for using free Wi-Fi service, but the service was used mostly to watch porn, an official of RailTel (a mini-Ratna Public Sector Undertaking) said. At present, RailTel is providing 1 GB Wi-Fi at the Patna railway station but it's planning to increase it to 10 GB..

China today launched the two-man Shenzhou 11 space mission, which is its longest-ever manned space mission. The two astronauts will spend about a month in China's recently-launched experimental space lab, Tiangong 2. While China claims its space programme is for peaceful purposes.

PM Modi holds bilateral meetings with Nepal, Bangladesh PMs
Prime Minister NarendraModi held bilateral meetings with his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal last night. The meetings were held after the BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Dinner in Goa.
MrModi discussed the entire gamut of bilateral issues with both leaders during the talks. The Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and Nepal had come to Goa to attend the BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Meeting.

Japan bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from airplanes
Japan has barred all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from airplanes, mirroring moves by US regulators and a string of carriers that banned the recalled devices over fire risk concerns.The weekend announcement from Japan's transport ministryfollows an earlier warning that asked airlines to urge passengers not to turn on or charge the smartphones on aircraft.
A transport ministry official said that however, aviation authorities went a step further on Saturday, ordering airlines to ban the devices completely.Japan's move came after US transport authorities on Friday issued an emergency order banning the phones and saying anyone attempting to travel with the recalled handsets may face fines and have the devices confiscated.Australian and New Zealand airlines have banned the phone from all planes.
Typhoon Sarika Batters the Philippines
Typhoon Sarika slammed into the northeastern Philippines.Strong winds and rains knocked down trees and electricity poles, causing power outages and floods in the five provinces.
The typhoon, known locally as Karen, left more than 246,000 without power and telephone service.It is the twenty first named storm and the tenth typhoon of the annual Pacific typhoon season of 2016.
'World's smallest museum' opens up in UK
The Warley Museum, considered to be the world's smallest museum, recently opened up inside a phone booth in Yorkshire, England. The museum exhibits photographs, etched glass, and a selection of personal items revealing information about the history of the village. While the current theme for the display is local history, the group plans to change it every three months.

BRICS Development Bank to Raise Lending
The development bank set up by the BRICS group of emerging economies will ramp up lending to $2.5 billion next year.
It has already approved loans totalling $900 million to green projects in each member state.It has also started a borrowing programme, issuing a 3 billion yuan ($450 million) bond.
The BRICS countries agreed to create the New Development Bank (NDB) in July 2014.

Actor BomanIrani has invested an undisclosed amount in the angel investment round of Rooter, an app that aims to connect sports fans across the world. Launched in 2016 by Piyush and SohamSinha, Rooter connects users with people having similar sports interests, around their workplace and home. It also provides pre-match quizzes, live match prediction games, and post-match interactions.
Government Grants BP PlcLicence
Government has granted a licence to BP Plc, Europe’s third-biggest oil company, to set up 3,500 petrol pumps in India.
It will be the 10th company to enter the lucrative fuel retailing sector.For a licence to retail auto fuels a company should have invested a minimum of Rs 2,000 crore in exploration or production of oil and gas.India currently has about 56,190 petrol pumps.
CII announces support to small &medium enterprises in Sri Lanka
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has announced their support to small and medium enterprises in Sri Lanka during a delegation-level visit to Colombo last week.
The delegation which met Minister of Industry and Commerce RishadBathiudeen, said that CII has lots of expertise in areas of education and skills, water management, agriculture, IT/ICT and renewable energy-all these being important to Sri Lanka as well. He said CII has centres of excellence in several aspects-such as logistics, sustainability, green initiatives, quality and leadership etc.

India and Brazil signed four agreements in areas of investment cooperation and facilitation, cattle genomics, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.He said both countries have made progress in cooperation in new areas - drug regulation, agriculture research, and cyber security.

Amandeep Singh appointed as the next Ambassador/PR of India to the UN Conference on Disarmament, Geneva   
Former IAS officer Amandeep Singh Gill was appointed as the next Ambassador/PR of India to the UN Conference on Disarmament, Geneva.
The Conference on Disarmament (CD) is a forum established in 1979 by the international community to negotiate multilateral arms control and disarmament agreements.
It was the forum used by its member states(65) to negotiate the Biological Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Tata Communications appoints James Parker as president of global sales
Tata Communications appoints James Parker as president of global salesi. James Parker was appointed as the president of global sales by Vinod Kumar, Managing Director and Group CEO of Tata Communications.
Parker will be responsible for leading the company’s global sales organisation across all customer segments, according to a company release.

Congo River is world's deepest river
The Congo River, which spans ten countries in Africa, is considered the world's deepest river by the Guinness World Records, with a maximum depth of at least 220 metres (722 feet). The discovery was made by scientists from the US Geographical Survey and the American Museum of Natural History in July 2008.
Saina receives honorary doctorate from SRM University
Indian shuttlerSainaNehwal received an honorary doctorate in literature from SRM University in Chennai on Sunday. In her acceptance speech, Saina said, "My father will be very proud of me today because he is a scientist, and he always wanted me to be a doctor." Nehwal is the third sportsperson to be conferred a doctorate by the university.
C Radhakrishnan selected for Mathrubhumi Literary award
Eminent writer C Radhakrishnan has been selected for the Mathrubhumi Literary Award in recognition of his contribution to the field of literature. The award carries a cash prize of Rs two lakh, a citationand a statuette.
Radhakrishnan was selected by a panel chaired by novelist M Mukundan with Sethu and Sarah Joseph being the othermembers of the jury, Mathrubhumi Managing Director M P Veerendra Kumar and Managing Editor P V Chandran said in a statement here today.
Recipient of several honours, including the Literary Academyof India, Kerala Literary Academy, Radhakrishnan has proved his mettle in various capacities as novelist, short story writer, cine director, teacher and media personnel.

A light-hearted Indian film “TuHaiMera Sunday,” had its world premiere at the London Film Festival (LFF).The movie which was screened is based in Mumbai and revolves around amateur footballers.

US Navy has commissioned its largest, most expensive and technologically advanced destroyer, Zumwalt. The 610-foot-long ship, commissioned in Baltimore also has an advanced power plant and weapon systems. The Zumwalt, costing nearly USD 4.4 billion.

SourabhVarma wins men’s singles title at Chinese Taipei Open
23-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, SourabhVarma defeated Malaysia’s Daren Liew 11-4 11-7 11-9 to clinch the men’s single title in the summit clash of the $55,000 Grand Prix tournament in Taipei. Sourabh, who is on a comeback trail after being on the sidelines with multiple injuries.
It is his third successive summit and he had won the National championship in 2011.

Andy Murray Wins Shanghai Masters
Britain’s Andy Murray beat Roberto Bautista Agut  7-6 6-1  in straight sets to win the Shanghai Masters.He now edge closer to Novak Djokovic in the world rankings.
It is the third time he has won the Shanghai Masters, which gives him 1,000 ranking points.He is 915 points behind the Djokovic  for 2016, increasing his hopes of finishing the year as world number one.
Shah overtakes Ashwin as fastest Asian to 100 Test wickets
Pakistani spinner Yasir Shah overtook India's RavichandranAshwin as the fastest Asian Test bowler to reach 100 Test wickets, after reaching the landmark in his 17th Test match on Sunday. The bowler became the overall second fastest to reach the figure in Test cricket. Ashwin and Pakistani spinner SaeedAjmal reached the 100-wicket landmark in 18 and 19 Tests respectively.
Last King of RwanadaKigeli V dies in US
The last king of Rwanda, Kigeli V, who ruled the east African nation for less than a year before being forced into exile, finally settling in the United States, has died. PTI quoting official website said that he was 80.
Born Jean-Baptiste Ndahindurwa, King Kigeli came to power in 1959 and was forced to leave the country the following year after clashing with the Belgian colonial power. In 1961, the monarchy was abolished. The king began a life of exile in east Africa, including Kenya and Uganda, before leaving for America, where he settled in the suburbs of Washington in 1992.Details of his death early yesterday were not immediately known.
