i. The World Teachers’ Day (WTD) 2016 was observed across the world on 5 October 2016.
The theme for the World Teachers’ Day 2016 was Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status.
Cabinet approves amendment bill related to HIV/AIDS

i. The Cabinet has approved amendments to the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2014. The Bill seeks to safeguard rights of HIV-affected people, as well as to prevent and control spread of HIV and AIDS.
ii. The Bill also aims to enhance access to health care services by ensuring informed consent and confidentiality for HIV-related testing, treatment and clinical research.
iii. In another decision, the Cabinet permitted HLL Lifecare Limited, a Mini Ratna PSU under Health Ministry, to sub-lease more than 330 acres of Government land at Chengalpattu in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu to set up a Medical park.
The medical devices manufacturing park will be set up through a Special Purpose Vehicle and HLL's shareholding will be above 50 per cent. It will be the 1st medical technology manufacturing cluster in the country
The Cabinet also approved transfer on 2 acres of Indian Agricultural Research Institute land to Veterinary Council of India (VCI) on lease basis. The decision will enable VCI to expand its activities related to skill up gradation of in-service veterinary professionals.
CCEA gives nod to acquisition of 11 per cent stake in Russian oil company
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, CCEA today gave nod to acquisition of 11 per cent stake in Russian oil company JSC Vankorneft, by ONGC Videsh Limited, OVL for 930 million dollars.
This will provide 3.2 Million Metric Ton of Oil Equivalent to OVL by 2017. It will also enable Indian PSUs to acquire new technologies.
It is in line with ONGC’s goal of adding high quality international exploration and production assets and augmenting India's energy security
PM to visit Lucknow to celebrate​ Dussehra
Prime Minister NarendraModiwill ​visit Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow on the 11th of this month to celebrate​ Dussehra.
Talking to AIR, BJP National Vice President and ​Lucknow Mayor Dinesh Sharma said, MrModi will witness the famous 'Ram Leela' at Aishbagh and thereafter stay back for the 'RavanDahan', ​or ​burning of Ravana effigies.
Our correspondent reports that it will be for the first time any Prime Minister ​will celebrate the festival in Lucknow​.

Odisha: NHRC seeks report on ration denial to HIV positive orphans
The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has taken a strong exception over the denial of ration to two HIV positive orphan siblings in a remote village in Odisha'sKendrapara, asking the authorities to furnish a compliance report on the action taken.
Earlier, the Odisha Human Rights Commission had issued similar direction for compliance of the action taken report.

India – Singapore Finance Dialogue
To further strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties, India and Singapore decided to set up a Finance Dialogue, to be co-chaired by Finance Minister ArunJaitley and Deputy Prime Minister TharmanShanmugaratnam of Singapore.
The two sides discussed furthering Singapore and India’s strong economic ties, for instance, by setting up a Finance Dialogue between the finance ministries of the two countries.
The two-way trade between the two countries declined to USD 15.02 billion in 2015-16 from USD 16.93 billion in the previous financial year.
However, Singapore is the second largest source of foreign direct investment in India.The total FDI from Singapore to India has totalled USD 45.88 billion (April 2000 to March 2016) or 16 per cent of the inflows during the period.
In the last financial year, the FDI inflows totalled USD 13.69 billion.The bilateral ties were upgraded to the level of a Strategic Partnership with Singapore.More than 8,000 Indian companies are present in Singapore.

Prime Minister holds bilateral meeting with Sri Lankan counterpart in New Delhi
Prime Minister NarendraModi today met visiting Prime Minister of Sri Lanka RanilWickremesinghe at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The meeting was aimed at further deepening the partnership with a valued neighbour.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister SushmaSwaraj called on MrWickremesinghe, who is on a three day visit to India. The two leaders are believed to have discussed issues of mutual interest.
The visiting dignitary will attend the Opening Plenary of the India Economic Summit along with Commerce and Industry Minister NirmalaSitharaman tomorrow.

Myanmar scraps stringent emergency law
Myanmar has scrapped a stringent law which had been used by the former military leaders to silence opponents. The Emergency Provisions Act was introduced in 1950 after independence from Britain.
It allowed the authorities to detain people without charge and prescribed jail or execution for a wide range of offences considered treason. It allowed punishments of up to seven years for crimes like disrupting public morality or spreading false news.
The National League for Democracy, which swept to power in Myanmar earlier this year ending decades of military rule, had been trying to get rid of the law.

France becomes first country to ban plastic cups and plates
France has become the first country in the world to ban disposable plastic cups and plates.
The country has passed a law in September 2016 that will go into effect in January 2020. The law will require all disposable tableware to be made from 50% biologically-sourced materials that can be composted at home. That number will rise to 60% by January of 2025.
The measure is an addition to France's Energy Transition for Green Growth Act, a wide-reaching law adopted in 2015 with the aim of mitigating the impact of climate change.
In July 2016, France imposed a total ban on the distribution of lightweight plastic bags at supermarket checkouts.

India's GDP growth to remain strong at 7.6% in 2016, 7.7% in 2017, says World Bank
The World Bank has said, India's GDP growth will remain strong at 7.6 percent in 2016 and 7.7 percent in 2017. In its latest report 'South Asia Economic Focus' released yesterday in Washington, it said India's economic growth remained robust, and is expected to support continued poverty reduction.

MasterCard launches 'selfie pay' app in Europe
US financial services company MasterCard has rolled out 'Identity Check', an app that uses facial biometrics for payment authentication, in Europe. The app will be made available to MasterCard users globally in early 2017, according to a report. The app supports both selfies and fingerprint biometrics, offering users a choice of authenticating a mobile payment at the point of purchase.

India – Singapore Sign 3 Agreements
India and Singapore held delegation-level talks headed by Prime Minister NarendraModi and Singapore Premier Lee HsienLoong in New Delhi.Singapore PM is on five day official visit to India.
The two leaders witness the signing of 3 agreements in skill development and industrial property.
One memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Education Services (ITEES) and India’s National Skill Development Corporation on collaboration in technical and vocational education and training.
Another MoU was signed between the Assam government and ITEES Singapore also on collaboration in technical and vocational education and training.A third MoU was signed in the field of industrial property cooperation.
Cabinet approved MoUs from various country’s
Cabinet approved MoU between India and European Union on water cooperation. It aims to strengthen technological, scientific and management capabilities of India and the European Union in the field of water management.
The Cabinet also approves MoU with the African Asian Rural Development Organization for capacity building in the field of Rural Development.

Maj Gen Nilendra Appointed ADG NCC
Major General Nilendra Kumar is appointed new Additional Director General NCC Directorate, Jammu and Kashmir.
He took over the charge from Major General S SJakhar who has superannuated from service on September 30.
Major General Nilendra Kumar is an alumnus of National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Brigade of Guards in June 1982.
He was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of a Sub Area in eastern sector before taking over the present appointment.
NayanjotLahiri wins 2016 John F Richards Prize
NayanjotLahiri, Professor of History at the Ashoka University, has been awarded the 2016 John F. Richards Prize for her book Ashoka in Ancient India. The book has been critically acclaimed for its riveting account of an emperor who spoke to his people through his edicts; his victories and loss that left a legacy that surpassed him.
The Richards Prize is awarded annually by the American Historical Association (AHA) to the best book in South Asian history. The prize will be awarded at the Association’s 131st Annual Meeting in January, 2017.
Jean-Pierre Sauvage, J Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L Feringa won 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on 5 October 2016 was awarded to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir James Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L Feringa.
The trio were bestowed with the prestigious award for the design and synthesis of molecular machines.
Jean-Pierre Sauvage is a French coordination chemist. Sir James Fraser Stoddart is a Scottish chemist. He works in the area of supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology. Bernard L Feringa is a synthetic organic chemist, specializing in molecular nanotechnology and homogenous catalysis
Former ISRO chief U R Rao becomes first Indian to be inducted into IAF Hall of Fame
Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman UdupiRamachandraRao, popularly known as U. R. Rao, was inducted into the 2016 IAF Hall of Fame on 30 September 2016 by the International Aeronautical Federation (IAF).
With this, Rao became the first Indian to be inducted into IAF Hall of Fame.
SangeetNatakAkademi fellowships and awards for the Year-2015 presented
President Pranab Mukherjee on 4 October 2016 presented the SangeetNatakAkademi Fellowships (AkademiRatna) and SangeetNatakAkademi Awards (AkademiPuraskars) for the Year-2015. The awards were presented at a function in RashtrapatiBhawan.
C V Chandrasekhar, an eminent personality in the field of performing arts, was conferred with the SangeetNatakAkademi Fellow (AkademiRatna). The Fellowship of the Akademi is the most prestigious and rare honour, which is restricted to 40 numbers at any given time. Presently there are only 40 Fellows of the SangeetNatakAkademi.
Forty three artists from field of Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre and Puppetry and Overall contribution/scholarship in Performing Arts for the SangeetNatakAkademi Awards (AkademiPuraskar) for the year 2015. These forty-three (43) artists include two joint awards.

World's highest energy density EV battery unveiled
California-based electric vehicle (EV) company Faraday Future, in collaboration with LG Chemical, has unveiled what it claims to be the 'world's highest energy density' EV battery. Elon Musk's Tesla and Panasonic currently have the highest energy density batteries, at 60 kWh and larger. Earlier, the company had revealed plans for a $1 billion EV factory in Nevada.

Pakistan debarred from Kabaddi World Cup 2016
Pakistan has been debarred for the kabaddi world up 2016, which will kick off this week in India. According to media reports Pakistan has denied entry because of a spike in tensions between the two nations after the Uri attack.
Talking to the international New Agency AFP, International Kabaddi Federation, IKF chief DeorajChaturvedi said, Pakistan is a valuable member of the IKF but looking at the current scenario and in the best interest of both the nations, the federation decided that Pakistan must be refrained from the championship
BRICS U-17 football tournamen begins in Goa today
The first edition of the BRICS Under-17 Football tournament begins in Goa today. The tournament, featuring Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been organised on the occasion of the 8th BRICS summit that will be held in Goa on the 15th of this month.
The inaugural match will be played between Brazil and China.India will begin its campaign against Russia. The coach of the Indian team, Nicolau Adam said, the tournament will be a good exposure for the boys who did well in the Asian Football Confederation Under-16 Championships.
Noted Kerala artist Yusuf Arakkal dies at 71
Eminent contemporary artist Yusuf Arakkal passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was 71. Arakkal had recently released a book called Faces of Creativity, which is a comprehensive collection of portraits of fellow artists.  It was the first time that an Indian artist had done portraits of other artists. Yusuf Arakkal was a Malayali painter based in Bengaluru.
Dhoni's friend who taught him helicopter shot died at 32
Cricketer MS Dhoni's friend SantoshLal, who is said to have taught the cricketer the helicopter shot, died at the age of 32 in 2013. In the recently released biopic, 'M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story', Sushant Singh Rajput while portraying 'Dhoni' is shown learning this shot as a youngster. Santosh is said to have called the shot the 'Thappad Shot'.
