Here we are with our 12th session of our Roots of English hope this will help you with your English language preparation.
English language is made up of four parts
GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS
Now if you learn these roots you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning.
The first question arises here is what is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word. Now how many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.
For ex– subtracted
Sub (prefix) ——–tract (root) ———-ed (suffix)
Note: PREFIX—a word, letter or number placed before another.
SUFFIX—a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
CASE I
Consider lud-, ludi-, lus- as a ROOT means play, make sport of, jest, sportive, pastime, false
Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
ALLUDE –— to play with, to joke or to jest at, dally with, to touch lightly upon a subject
ALLUSION —– an indication of something, a mention of, a hint, a suggestion
ALLUSIVE —– to playing with words, punning
ALLUSIVELY —- referring to hinting something indirectly rather than speaking directly
COLLUDE –— to act together secretly to achieve a fraudulent or deceitful purpose, to connive
COLLUSION —- literally, a playing together or an agreement or understanding for purposes of trickery or fraud
COLLUSIVE —- acting together in a private manner toward a fraudulent or illegal end
DELUDE —- to fool the mind or judgment of someone, so as to cause what is false to be accepted as true
DELUSION —- a false idea, belief, or opinion that is contrary to fact or reality
DELUSORY —- tending to mislead or to deceive
CASE II
ROOT —- luto-, lut-, luv-, lu- means wash, clean, washing of water against the shore, a flood
Now words we can guess of are –
ALLUVIAL—– relating to or consisting of any material that has been carried or deposited by running water
ABLUVION—– a substance, or things, that are washed away
ABLUENT —- a cleansing agent, a detergen
ABLUTED —- a reference to anything that is being washed and cleaned
ABLUTION —- a washing or cleansing; such as, a religious ceremony of purification
ABLUTIONARY —- a reference to a religious purification of the body by washing
ABLUTOMANIA —- an obsessional preoccupation with cleanliness, washing, or bathing, often accompanied by compulsive rituals
ABLUTOPHOBE —- someone who suffers from an obsessive dread or hatred of showering or bathing
ABLUTOPHOBIC —– a person who has a persistent or abnormal anxiety of bathing or washing
ALLUVIAL AQUIFER —– an underground water supply which comes from porous rock, sand, gravel, etc.
