Cauvery water Dispute

September 24, 2016

Water is life and without water one can not survive but still waste of water is matter of concern for the whole world.Water has always been perceived as a gift from the gods as it rained from the heavens.

The only organism that doesn’t understand the importance of water is humans, especially in industrialized countries.Without water, organisms could not exist. But still we are not understanding the importance of such a precious things that we have today but might be not available tomorrow.

Recently the war for water can be seen between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These two states fight for Cauvery water even today also. Cauvery river one of the main source of water for these two states always remain in the focus regarding sharing of water between these two states. The origin of the cauvery river is at Talakaveri, Kodagu in Karnataka, flows generally south and east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

☛  History of  Cauvery river dispute:

The sharing of waters of the cauvery river has been the source of a serious conflict between the two Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.Sharing of water dispute draws their history since british era.In the late nineteenth century the Mysore Government purporting to restore their old irrigation works wanted to build a number of irrigation works for the benefit of new areas. These constructions were to be made on the rivers and streams emanating and passing through their State.Apprehending that such constructions by the Government of Mysore will diminish the water flowing into the State of Madras, the State of Madras took  up the matter with the Government of India. Two agreements in 1892 and 1924 between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and Princely State of Mysore were taken place in order to solve the dispute regarding sharing of water..After Independence, the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) was constituted by the Government of India on 2nd June 1990 to adjudicate the water dispute regarding inter-state river Cauvery and the river valley thereof. The Tribunal had also passed an Interim Order in June, 1991 and further Clarificatory Orders on the Interim Order in April, 1992 and December,1995.The water utilization level at the Cauvery basin is the highest among all rivers in the country. As much as 90 percent of the basin had been exploited by the early 1990s. Thereafter, it was all about limited water availability, multiple user, increased agricultural activity and diverted land use shrinking the basin further.

☛  Present Scenario:

Recently the Supreme Court of india order asking Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water for 10 days to neighbouring Tamil Nadu has sparked off an agitation by farmers in Karnataka. In the Year 2016 Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have received less than normal rainfall during the monsoon. Karnataka claimed that it cannot release water to TN for agriculture as it needs it for drinking water purposes.Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti is believed to have told Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Delhi that the Centre “couldn’t do anything” as the Cauvery dispute was sub judice.  The karnataka state  government has deferred its decision to release Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu until the one-day session of both Houses of the legislature decides on 23 september 2016.

Water is a resource that should not be taken for granted. It needs to be conserved, just as we save other valuable resources. One can not imagine life without water. Today we talk about sustainable development of modernization of world but without water we can't survive. Human beings need to learn the importance of saving water for the future.

ALL THE BEST
