Only 3 weeks are left RBI Grade B Officer 2016 Exam. Many of you are preparing hard to become an Officer in India’s Central Bank. The Reserve Bank of India is one of the most prestigious institutions of the country. The RBI Grade B Exam is considered to be one of the highly competitive exams in the Banking Sector.
As per the notification, this year RBI will recruit only 163 candidates for RBI Grade B Officer Post. Obviously, the competition is very high. Continuous preparation & positive attitude in every situation is needed to get into the final list. One of the most prominent thing which is confusing you is “What strategy should I follow?” to make my name under the final selection.
In previous article, we have already published the detail Syllabus & Exam pattern of the Exam. Hence, today we will discuss about the strategies to crack RBI Grade B 2016 Exam.
Prelims – The first phase of the exam consist of 4 sections i.e. – General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude & Reasoning. Many of the candidates take first phase exam casually and start preparation for Mains exam even before appearing in the exam. As per the previous year exam analysis, only 2000 – 3000 candidates get shortlisted from lakhs of candidates in Mains exam. So, prepare well for prelims exam.
Based on the paper pattern of last 3 years, this is the paper pattern for RBI Grade B Officer Exam 2016.
General Awareness Section
The General Awareness considered as one of the scoring section of the exam. This section consists of total 80 questions and has more weight – age as compared to other three sections. So, as to cover all the important Current + Banking + Financial Awareness news of last six months, you need to work hard on this section.
General Knowledge is something which you cannot mug up in one or two days. And this section is not similar like other sections (Quant or Reasoning) where you can use short tricks or formula to solve the questions during online exam. Most importantly, you need to be well aware about the news & current happenings which occurred in the last six months.
Strategy – Make habit of reading current affairs, Banking & Financial Awareness news from today. Note down all the important news on a topic wise – like – Cover all sports news under one heading – RIO Olympics 2016 – Under this heading you can note all the important news related to the Olympics, which can be asked during exam.
For Ex – Who among the following wins India’s first medal at RIO Olympics 2016? – Sakshi Malik (58kg category, Wrestler) Bronze.
Note: In 2015 Exam, most of the questions of Economic & Social Issues (ESI) & Finance Management (FM) were based on current affairs.
Cutoff – Last year the cutoff of General Awareness section was – 20 for General, 16 for OBC, 14.25 for SC & ST. So, try to attempt 55+ questions to get 30+ marks in this section. Try to devote 25 – 30 minutes in GK section.

English Language
This section contains 30 questions and it is considered as one of the confusing sections of the exam. As candidates are always in a dilemma whether he/she will clear the sectional cutoff of this section or not, even after attempting good number of questions. If you have good command over Reading Ability and Grammar, then you can score 15-18 questions in this section. The level of this section is expected to be of Moderate to Tough difficulty. Ideally, you should not devote more than 25 minutes to English Section.
Cutoff – Last Year cutoff of English section was – 7.50 for General, 6 for OBC, 5.25 for SC & ST categories.
In Previous year question Papers; there was question on Comprehension of 8 questions, Fill in the Blanks for 12 questions, Sentence rearrangement and Sentence Correction of 5-5 questions.
The level of this section will be moderate. The questions in this section can be asked from different topics which are mentioned below-
(i) Reading Comprehension – 10 Questions (Lengthy) will based on Economy
(ii) Cloze Test – 10 Questions (Moderate)
(iii) Parajumbles (7 statements)– 5 Questions (Moderate)
(iv) Spotting Error – 5 Questions (Moderate)
How to score maximum marks in this section?
(i) If you are weak or average in this section you need to attempt previous year questions of various Banking exams.
(ii) You should focus on: Grammar Rules, Sentence Improvements and Comprehension and practice them daily.
(iii) For scoring high in the English Language section you need to attempt Reading Comprehension questions in the exam. One RCs is expected to be asked in Exam with 8-10 Questions. So if you manage to attempt 3 to 4 questions in RC, your chances of clearing the sectional cutoff will be good. Practice one RC on daily basis.
(iv) In Previous year Papers, RC questions were based on Central Banks of various countries and also on China Economic crisis. Here, it is expected that same types of questions can be asked in RBI Exam. So, try to read at least one Editorial of Newspaper in a day.
(v) Try to Practice 4-5 sets of following topics on a regular basis before the exam: Fill in the Blanks (Double Spacing), Sentence Correction and Sentence Improvement.
(vi) For improving your grammar part you can read Wren & Martin and S.P. Bakshi (Arihant)
Reasoning Ability
This section contains 60 questions and it is one of the most scoring sections in the exam. If you have good command over this section, you can score 30+ questions in just 40 minutes. All you need to do is attempt the questions with good accuracy. The level of this section is expected to be of moderate difficulty
The reasoning section tests your analytical and logical reasoning skills i.e. your ability to interpret data and information given in the form of puzzles, brain teasers or clues and sort it to arrive at a meaningful outcome. It does not generally test conceptual or theoretical knowledge (apart from one or two areas) but requires a lot of practice of different question types.
Cutoff – Last year of cutoff of Reasoning section was – 15 for General, 12 for OBC, 10.75 for SC & ST categories.
Following topics are important, because usually at least 4 questions come from each of these.
(i) Syllogism (Moderate)
(ii) Seating Arrangement (Circular) (Inward Outward) Blood Relation based – (Tough)
(iii) Linear Arrangement – (Moderate)
(iv) Puzzle – (Tough)
(v) Input Output – (Tough)
(vi) Logical / Analytical Reasoning – (Tough)
(vii) Data Sufficiency – (Moderate) mostly on seating arrangement
(viii) Inequality – (Moderate)
(ix) Coding Decoding – (Moderate)
(x) Miscellaneous Questions – (Moderate)
Note: Must practice Previous Papers question papers of banking Exams namely IBPS, SBI and RBI exams.
Quantitative Aptitude
This section contains 30 questions and generally students find it as one of the most difficult sections in the Grade B exam. As far as quant is concern speed matters a lot but don’t forget that it should be with 100% accuracy that will enhance your marks and save time. If you are weak or average in Quant section than it is always preferable to devote maximum time to the quant section so that you can attempt maximum questions and manage to clear the sectional cutoff. Try to devote 30 minutes in this section and attempt 14-16 questions with accuracy.
Cutoff – Last year cutoff of Quant section was – 7.50 for General, 6 for OBC, 5.25 for SC & ST categories.
The Quant section is more oriented towards data interpretation rather than conventional profit-loss type stuff. Go through the old papers of banking exams and prepare topics accordingly.
The level of this section will be moderate to tough . The questions in this section can be asked from different topics which are mentioned below
(i) Number Series – (Moderate to Tough)
(ii) Data Interpretation – includes – Missing DI, Pie Chart , Caselet DI , Mix DI – (Tough)
(iii) Quadratic Equation – (Moderate to Tough)
(iv) Miscellaneous Questions – (Tough)
Miscellaneous Questions consist of questions from different topics such as – Profit loss, Average, SI & CI, Ratio & Proportion, Time & Work, Time, Speed & Distance, Boats & Streams, etc.
Important tips for preparation in last three weeks
(i) Try to solve practice paper sets with a stop watch and then analyze your performance and scores. Do practice concepts of each and every section.
(ii) Mock Tests are the best way to check your performance. Try to solve at least 2 or 3 Mock papers daily as it will help you find any difficult areas in the test papers that you have covered and need revision.
(iii) High scores in Reasoning and Quants section can be obtained only through time management and clear concepts. So, daily practice is required to get perfection in these subjects.
(iv) Mock Tests will also help you increase your speed in solving the paper, along with smooth and easy movement across sections.
Follow Time Management –
(i) The main weapon to crack RBI Grade B Officers exam is the proper Time Management.
(ii) Time management and Question selection are two aspects which are a part of every RBI Grade B Officers exam.
(iii) Keep a STOP WATCH with you while you are solving the paper.
(iv) Make sure that you do not get stuck on any question and focus on going through all the questions in the section at least once. Also, be careful with your selection of the questions in each section. You are not under any compulsion to solve all questions.
(v) Fix the TIME while attending papers. Make proper Schedule for your Study and follow it with passion.
