Pon Radhakrishnan launches "Colours of Independence" event in Chennai

·         Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan launched the "Colours of Independence" event at a prominent mall in Chennai today.
·         He said India is on the path of becoming a world superpower as dreamt by leaders like former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
·         Later responding to queries of media persons, he said the proposed 27,500 crore rupees Enayam Major Port project near Colachel in Tamil Nadu would be implemented by reclaiming about 1,000 acre land from the Arabian Sea to avoid dislocation of local fishermen.
·         The prestigious project would lead to overall development of the region and the nation, he said and charged that fishermen are being misled by political forces for their selfish ends.
·         MrRadhakrishnan urged the state government to extend cooperation for the survey works by officials in the area for the project.
Rail Budget's 92-year-old journey set to end
·         Putting an end to a 92-year-old tradition of the colonial era, the railway Budget will be merged with the general Budget from 2017-18 onwards. 
·         The move will come as a relief to the national transporter, which, until now, has been reeling under an additional burden of Rs 40,000 crore from higher salaries, following implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.
·         It also has to bear close to RsRs 35,000 crore of subsidy burden. If the merger goes through, the Railways will get rid of the annual dividend it has to pay for gross budgetary support from the government.
New and uniform education policy to be evolved soon: Javadekar.
·         Union Human Resources Development Minister PrakashJavadekar has said that a new and uniform education policy will be evolved soon.
·         Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad yesterday, he said the new policy will focus on accountability, innovation and equity.
·         He welcomed suggestions on the draft education policy. Stating that the deadline for comments on the draft has been extended till 15th of September, the Minister said the new policy aimed at enhancing quality of education.
·         He held discussion over the draft Education Policy with the two Telugu States, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Five electronic manufacturing clusters to be set up in Andhra Pradesh: Ravi Shankar Prasad
·         Union Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Union government will set up five electronic manufacturing clusters in Andhra Pradesh including Tirupati and Sri in Chittoor district and Anantapur where it is in final stage.
·         The Union Minister held a high-level official meeting with the authorities of NIC, UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), C.DOT and STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Tirupati on Saturday.
·         Speaking to media on the occasion, Mr Prasad said that in Tirupati cluster, where 30 electronic companies are operating, in total made a business of 80 crore rupees, while at national level 41,000 crore rupees was exported.
·         Stating that the State of Andhra Pradesh is doing well with regard to IT and ITES, he said that NarendraModi government has also taken up application of technology to espouse the cause of poor by bringing in transparency.
INTERNATIONAL:
Chinese FM Wang Yi meets PM Modi amid strained ties over NSG bid
·         Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today called on Prime Minister NarendraModi and held talks with his counterpart SushmaSwaraj during which India's bid for membership of the NSG is understood to have figured among other regional and bilateral issues.
·         Wang and Swaraj also discussed issues relating to annual BRICS summit which will be hosted by India in Goa in October.
·         Wang had arrived in Goa yesterday on a three-day visit to India. He had met Goa Chief Minister LaxmikantParsekar and discussed about preparations for the BRICS summit.
6.9k km gas pipelines to link B'desh, Myanmar, India
·         The government plans to lay 6,900 km of gas pipelines linking Bangladesh, Myanmar, most north-eastern states, and West Bengal, as part of the Hyd​rocarbon Vision 2030 for the north-eastern region, an ONGC executive said on Saturday. Further, the ONGC Board has approved a plan to invest 5,050 crore by 2022 to explore more gas in Tripura, he added.
BANKING NEWS:
Banks to start ITR e-verification without netbanking
·         After Punjab National Bank and the United Bank of India, more banks are likely to start a facility wherein an account holder can electronically verify his income tax returns (ITR) without having a netbanking account, the Central Board of Direct Taxes has said. This e-verification facility was used by over 75.3 lakh taxpayers till August 5, latest data revealed.
BUSINESS/ECONOMY NEWS:
Govt approves Rs 1,911-crore highway projects in six states
·         Government has approved Rs 1,911-crore highway projects for six states, including Karnataka and Maharashtra.
·         The standing finance committee (SFC) has approved six road projects in Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh to be built at a cost of an estimated Rs 1,910.87 crore.
·         The official said SFC approved the NH 61 stretch in Nagaland for an estimated Rs 343 crore, besides upgradation of Rayachoti-Kadapa stretch on NH 18 for an estimated Rs 350 crore in Andhra Pradesh.
RBI may not be able to meet inflation target: IMF paper
·         An IMF paper has raised question marks over the ability of RBI to target inflation through monetary measures, saying the size of formal financial sector is small in India and may undermine the effectiveness of interest rate changes on aggregate demand.
·         The IMF working paper assumes significance as the Reserve Bank of India has recently implemented an inflation-targeting regime that requires it to hit publicly announced targets for retail inflation, based on Consumer Price Index (CPI).

PratapBhanu Mehta resigns from NMML body
·         Eminent academic PratapBhanu Mehta has resigned from the executive council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) over his purported disagreement with the recommendation of the search and selection committee, of which he was a member, regarding the premier institution’s next director.
·        While Dr. Mehta did not respond to calls from The Hindu, a senior NMML official confirmed that the academic had resigned a day after he emerged as the “lone dissenter” against the selection committee’s proposal.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
SpaceX successfully completes 4th sea-landing
·         Elon Musk-led space exploration startup SpaceX on Sunday successfully recovered its Falcon 9 rocket for the fourth time on a drone ship at sea.
·         The rocket also completed its primary mission of deploying Japanese communications satellite, JCSAT-16, into orbit.
·         The launch marks the eighth SpaceX mission this year, with a proposed goal of 18 missions by the end of 2016.
SPORTS NEWS:
Denmark wins 1st Olympic swimming gold in 68 yrs
·         Denmark won its first Olympic swimming gold in 68 years, with Danish swimmer PernilleBlume’s victory in the women’s 50-metre freestyle event on Saturday.
·         The medal was Denmark’s third in swimming, and the first for Blume, who clocked a timing of 24.07 seconds. The country had last won Olympic swimming golds at the 1948 London Olympic Games.
United States wins 1,000th Olympic gold medal
·         The United States won its 1,000th Olympic gold medal on Saturday when the American women's 4x100 meter medley relay team clinched victory at the Rio Games.
·         The honor of reaching the milestone was shared by Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel, who got to the wall first ahead of Australia.
·         Of the 1,000 gold medals, more than half have come from track and field (323) and swimming (246), USOC added.
India win third test against West Indies by 237 runs
·         Team India won the St Lucia Cricket Test against the West Indies by 237 runs lastnight to clinch the 4-match series, with one game still to go.
·         Resuming the final day of the Test at the overnight score of 157 for 3, India declared their second innings at 217 for 7 giving West Indies a target of 346.
·         AjinkyaRahane top scored with an unbeaten 78, while Rohit Sharma made 41.
Rio Olympics: DipaKarmakar to figure in final of vault event; SaniaMirza-RohanBopanna to play for bronze
·         On the eve of the Independence Day, Indian athletes at Rio Olympics will try to give the country more reasons to cheer.
·         In one of its first, all eyes will be on DipaKarmakar who will figure in the Final of Artistic Gymnastics, Vault apparatus.
·         It was last Sunday when Dipa's score of 14.850 in the qualifiers proved enough, to take her to the final of the women's vault event.
·         In the process, Karmakar, became the first Indian, across both genders, to qualify for a Final event in gymnastics at the Summer Games.
·         After a bad outing in their respective doubles event the mixed pair of SaniaMirza and RohanBopanna will try to make amends, as they are fighting today in the Bronze medal match.
·         The Indian pair will be facing Czech duo of RadekStepanek and Lucie Hradecka in the medal match.
OBITUARY:  
'Star Wars' actor Kenny Baker passes away at 81
·         Actor Kenny Baker, who played the character 'R2-D2' in the first six films of the 'Star Wars' franchise passed away on Saturday aged 81 due to prolonged illness.
·         The actor, who was 3 ft 8 in (112 cm) tall, starred in other films including 'Flash Gordon', 'Labyrinth' and 'The Elephant Man'. Baker died just 11 days before his 82nd birthday.
Spiritual guru,Akshardham founder Pramukh Swami passes away
·         Pramukh Swami, the 95-year-old founder of Akshardham temples and a saint of the Swaminarayan sect, passed away after prolonged illness at the Sarangpur temple, 150 km from here, on Saturday evening.
·         He was the president of the BochasanvasiAksharPurushottamSanstha (BAPS), a sub-sect of the Swaminarayan sect, which during his tenure expanded globally, with over 3000 temples built in five decades worldwide.
Lyricist Na Muthukumar passes away
·         The two time national cinema awardee for best lyrics Na Muthukumar passed away this morning in Chennai.
·         The 41 year old prominent writer has also penned novels in Tamil and has written more than 1,000 lyrics in various movies.
·         He was suffering from jaundice for the past few months.
