Here we are with our 4th session of our Roots of English hope this will help you with your English language preparation.

Roots of English

English language is made up of four parts

GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning.

The first question arises here is what is a root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word. Now how many parts is a word made of?

A word is made up of three parts.

For ex– subtracted

Sub (prefix) ——–tract (root) ———-ed (suffix)

Note: PREFIX—a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX—a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

CASE 1

ROOT —-AMI or AMO means LOVE, MORAL, EASY TO TALK TO

Now words we can guess of, such as

AMOR—- god of love

AMORET—- A love knot, love token, or love song.

AMORALLY—- without regard for morality

AMORETTE—- A petty love affair.

AMORIST—- one dedicated to love and lovemaking especially one who writes about love

AMORISTIC—- of or pertaining to romantic love

AMOROUS—- inclined toward or displaying love

AMITY—-friendly and peaceful relations

AMIABLE—-friendly, pleasant, lovable

AMIABLENESS—- a disposition to be friendly and approachable (easy to talk to)

AMOROUSNESS—- a feeling of love or fondness

Synonyms—-Friendly, Love, Attribute

Antonyms—-Unfriendly, Hate

CASE 2

ROOT —-CAUST or CAUT means to burn, caution, careful

Now words we can guess of, such as

CAUTEL—- caution

CAUTELOUS—- careful

CAUTERANT—- an instrument or substance used to destroy tissue for medical reasons by burning it with a hot iron or an electric current or a caustic or by freezing it.

CAUSTIC—- any chemical substance that burns or destroys living tissue

CAUSTICITY—- The quality of being physically caustic, burning, corrosive.

CAUSTICIZATION—- The act of making something burn (caustic).

CAUSTICALLY—- burnt in a vitriolic manner

CAUTERIZE—-to burn with a hot instrument.

HOLOCAUST—-total devastation, especially by fire.

SYNONYMS—-ACERBIC, BITTER, EROSIVE, MORDENT, MASS DESTRUCTION, UTTER CHAOS.
