Roots of English – 5

July 18, 2016

Dear Readers,

Here we are with our 5th session of our Roots of English hope this will help you with your English language preparation.

English Roots

English language is made up of four parts

GREEK ROOTS, GERMAN ROOTS, FRENCH ROOTS, LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning.

The first question arises here is what is a root?

A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word. Now how many parts is a word made of?

A word is made up of three parts.

For ex– subtracted

Sub (prefix) ——–tract (root) ———-ed (suffix)

Note: PREFIX—a word, letter or number placed before another.

SUFFIX—a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

CASE I

Consider CIDE as a ROOT means Killing or murder or cutting

Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,

SUICIDEkilling oneself

MATRICIDEkilling one’s mother

PATRICIDEkilling one’s father

FRATRICIDE—-killing one’s own brother

INFANTICIDEkilling a new born

FOETICIDE—-killing an unborn child

INSECTICIDES—-chemicals which are used for killing insects

PESTICIDES—-chemicals which are used for killing insects

HOMICIDE—-killing a human being

CASE II

ROOT —-Pater or Patri   means father or fatherhood or relating to fathers or father land

Now words we can guess of are –

PATRIARCHY—-A system (a family/ society) which is run by the male head (father) of the family.

PATRIOT—-One who loves his nation (the word actually originated from Germany where they call their nation as fatherland instead of mother land as in our country).

COMPATRIOT—-People who belong to the same nation and live together.

EXPATRIATE—-People who share the same origin but are currently leaves in some other nation.

PATERNITY—-Fatherhood

PATERNAL—-related to father

I hope this session will help you with your English Language Preparation. We will come back soon with our next session.
