Day 17 : Contra, Contro

  • contra, contro - against; opposite
Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  • Contradiction (noun) = speak against.
    • contra - Prefix = against
    • dic (discere) - Root = speak
    • tion - Suffix = the result of
  • Controversy (noun) = dispute.
    • contro - Prefix = against 
    • vers (versus) - Root = to turn
    • y - Suffix = the action of
Let's have a look at some more words with contra, contro prefixes, for better understanding.
  • contrary = against something
  • contrast = to stand against
  • controller = a person who manages or direct something
  • contraindication = a lack of agreement between facts, opinions
  • contraption = a machine or device that appears strange or unnecessarily complicated, and often badly made or unsafe
  • contradict = to say the opposite of what someone else has said
  • controvert = deny the truth of (something) / argue about (something)
  • contravention =  an action which offends against a law
