Topic 1 : "Baghdad in disarray"
- Disarray - the state of being confused and having no organization
- Deadliest - causing or able to cause death
- String of - continuous
- Boastfully - to say (something about oneself) in a proud way
- Claimed - to say that something is true or is a fact,
- Occurred - (especially of accidents and other unexpected events) happened
- In the heart of - in the most important part of something (central point)
- Carnage - the violent killing of large numbers of people
- So-called - used to express one's view that something is inappropriate
- Caliphate - an Islamic state, especially one ruled by a single religious and political leader
- Territory - (an area of) land, that is considered as belonging to or connected with a particular country or person
- Setbacks - something that happens that delays or prevents a process from developing
- Blunt - make something less sharp / useful
- Sectarian - (a person) strongly supporting a particular religious group and not willing to accept other beliefs
- Wounds - a damaged area of the body, such as a cut or hole in the skin or flesh
- Triggered - caused something bad to start
- Dominant - having power and influence over others
- Moreover - (used to add information) also and more importantly
- Worsening - to become worse or to make something become worse
- Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
- Threat - something that likely to cause damage / danger
- Partly - to some extent; not completely
- Structural - relating to the way in which parts of a system or object are arranged
- Invasion - an occasion when an army or country uses force to enter and take control of another country
- Destroyed - damaged something so badly
- Anarchy - a situation in which there is no organization and control, especially in society, because there is no effective government
- Machinery - the structure and systems of an organization or process
- Disbanded - to break a group
- Mess - a situation that is full of problems
- Suspicion - a belief or idea that something may be true
- Sectarianism - strongly supporting a particular religious group and not willing to accept other beliefs
- Incumbent - the holder of an office or post
- Incompetent - not having the ability to do something as it should be done
- Reform - to make an improvement
- Virtually - nearly / almost
- Stalled - stopped
- Exploit - make full use of and derive benefit from (a resource)
- Stable - strong (not likely to change)
- Terror - violent action that causes extreme fear
- Tall order - something that is difficult to do
- Luxury - great comfort
Topic 2 : "Look who’s stalking"
- Stalking - the crime of illegally following and watching someone over a period of time
- Brutal - cruel, violent, and completely without feelings
- Hacking - killing somebody with knife
- In broad daylight - if a crime is committed in broad daylight, it happens during the day, when it could have been seen and prevented
- Shone a harsh light on something - to show / say directly that something is very bad
- Reinforced - to make something stronger
- Nabbing - catching someone who did something wrong
- Engage - involve
- Tragic - very sad (often involving death and suffering)
- Countless - so many to be counted
- To address - to give attention to / to deal with a problem
- Continuum - a continuous sequence
- Extreme - very great
- Cracking down - to start dealing with bad or illegal behaviour in a more serious way
- Harassment - behaviour that annoys or upsets someone
- Essential - necessary or needed
- Definitively - surely (without any doubt)
- Hindsight - the ability to understand a situation only after it has happened
- Mildly - not seriously
- Playful way - funny and not serious
- Preventable - able to be stopped from happening
- Mourned - to feel or express great sadness, especially because of someone's death
- Corrosive - harmful and causing bad feelings
- Potentially - possibly
- Nudged-out - to force someone come out of something
- Amendment - a minor change to improve something
- Dignity - the importance and value that a person has, that makes other people respect them
- Imprisonment - to put someone in jail
- Offence - an illegal act / crime
- Subsequent - happening after something else
- Conviction - a formal diclaration by the court that someone is guilty of a criminal offence
- Foster - to encourage the development or growth of feelings
- Disinterest - lack of interest
- Empowered - to give someone freedom / authority to do something
