1. Virat Kohli:First Indian captain to hit double hundred outside India

  • India Test team captain Virat Kohli has become the first Indian captain  to amass a test double century in overseas.
  • Kohli  scored 200 runs against West Indies on  2nd day of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in North Sound, West Indies.
  • He broke former skipper Mohammed Azharuddin’s long-standing record of 192 set in 1990 against New Zealand in Auckland.
  • It was also the highest score by an Indian captain in the West Indies.

Note:- 

  • Three captains have managed double hundreds in a Test match vs West Indies in the Carribean.
  • Apart from Kohli, the first two were England’s Len Hutton (205 at Kingston in 1953-54) and Australia’s Bobby Simpson (201 at Bridgetown in 1964-65).

2. Corporation Bank launches ‘Green PIN’ facility

  • Corporation Bank has launched a new facility called ‘Green PIN’.
  • This is an online module for generation of Personal Identification Number (PIN) for credit card holders. The facility enables credit card users to generate PIN online.
  • PIN is compulsory for all point-of-sale (POS) terminal transactions at a merchant establishment.

3. HDFC ERGO enters into bancassurance tie-up with SVC Bank

  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company and Shamrao Vithal Co-operative (SVC) Bank have announced their bancassurance agency partnership to provide range of non-life insurance offerings to the customers of the bank.
  • The partnership combines HDFC ERGO’s experience in introducing innovative non-life insurance products with SVC Bank’s customer base across various States.
  • SVC Bank has 194 branches in 10 States including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
  • HDFC ERGO is a joint venture between HDFC Ltd. and ERGO International AG, a Germany-based company.
  • ERGO is a part of the Munich Re Group that stands among the largest insurance companies of the world with an asset share of over Rs. 9,00,000 crores.

4. RBI to monitor banks on customer rights

RBI

  • Reserve Bank  of India (RBI) will shortly start monitoring banks on issues relating to customer rights in five broad areas.
  • According to RBI Executive Director U S Paliwal the areas on which the regulator will be conducting surveys and supervision at various banks are right to privacy, right to fair treatment & transparency, fair and honest dealing, right to suitability and right to grievance redress & compensation.
  • RBI will start monitoring and supervising the banks on issues relating to customer rights.

5. Ganesh Singh appointed as Head of JPC for Land Acquisition Bill

  • BJP Lok Sabha member Ganesh Singh has been appointed the new Chairperson of the Joint Committee of Parliament examining the Land Acquisition Bill .
  • He will replaced S S Ahluwalia, who became Minister of the State for Parliamentary Affairs in reshuffle of the council of ministers.
  • Singh will have to move a resolution in the Lok Sabha seeking the seventh extension of the term of the panel.
  • Ganesh is a member of parliament from Satna constituency of Madhya Pradesh.

6.  India ranks 110th on Sustainable Development index

World

  • India has been ranked a low 110th out of 149 countries on Sustainable Development index (SDI).
  • The index is topped by the Sweden followed by Denmark and Norway on the top three performing countries respectively.
  • The aim of creating this index is to provide a report card for tracking Sustainable Development Goals  progress and ensuring accountability.
  • In the latest index the Central African Republic and Liberia are at the bottom of the Index while the US ranks 25th in the index and Russia 47th.
  • The index is formed by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

7. Film festival on Mother Teresa in India and abroad

This undated photo shows Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa will be beatified, 19 October 2003, in a ceremony in St Peter's Square, Vatican. The beatification ceremony is the penultimate step to being canonised a saint and has been the shortest in modern history. Following the beatification, a second miracle has to be verified by the Vatican before Mother Teresa can be proclaimed a saint.   • The Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF) focusing on Mother Teresa’s life and teachings is going to be held at over 100 locations in India and around 50 other countries.
  • The festival will be kicked off from Kolkata on August 26 after which it will travel all over the world for the next six months.
  • Film Festival will be organized by the World Catholic Association for Communication.
  • The festival would also feature a film on the Nobel laureate and inspired by her life. Mr. Sunil Lucas will be the festival director.
