·        World Zoonoses Day

World's largest charkha unveiled at Delhi airport:

·        Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra has unveiled the world’s largest Charkha at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, IGI in New Delhi.

·        The idea behind displaying the Charkha at the airport is to highlight India’s quest to foster an egalitarian society as demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation.

PM to embark on four African nations' visit tonight:

·        Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a four-nation tour to Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.

·        The visit is aimed at shoring up economic ties, firm up maritime security and counter balance China’s growing influence in the resource-rich continent.

·        On the first leg of his visit, Mr Modi will reach Maputo, the capital Mozambique tomorrow morning.

·        He will be the 1st Indian Prime minister to visit Mozambique in 34 years.

·        The Prime Minister will meet the Mozambique president Filipe Nyusi, and will also visit the Mozambique parliament.

Mumbai Metro's 1st underground line contracts awarded:

·        Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation on Tuesday announced that it has awarded contracts for civil works in seven packages for constructing Mumbai’s first underground metro corridor.

·        These include contracts worth ₹7,796 crore to Hindustan Construction Company and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The 33.5 km corridor, with a total cost of ₹18,115 crore, will provide north-south connectivity in the city.

MoU with Mozambique for import of pulses inked:

·        The Union Cabinet approved a long-term contract by signing an MoU with Mozambique for the import of pulses.

·        The MoU is aimed at promoting the production of pulses in the African country, thereby doubling the trade between the two nations by 2020-21.

·        This is expected to stabilise the price of pulses by meeting the current shortfall in supply.

Rajasthan villagers convert barren land into lake:

·        The residents of Ramsar village worked for five months and converted a barren land in their village into a lake to conserve water.

·        The 52 hectare barren land near Bhilo ki Basti in Ramsar was used by the villagers as the dumping ground for garbage.

·        With eight inches of water received during the pre-monsoon showers, the lake is filled up.

Union Cabinet approves Interest Subvention Scheme for farmers:

·        The Union Cabinet approved the Interest Subvention Scheme for farmers for the year 2016-17.

·        The Government has assigned a sum of 18276 crore rupees for the purpose.

·        This scheme will help farmers getting short term crop loan payable within one year up to 3 lakhs rupees at only 4% per annum.

SC-appointed Green Panel recommends high pollution cess of 20-22% on diesel vehicles:

·        The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) recommended a green cess of 20-22 percent on diesel vehicles.

·        EPCA is a Supreme court-appointed Green Panel for Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

Union Cabinet approves setting up of Major port at Enayam in Tamil Nadu:

·        The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave in-principle approval for setting up a Major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu.

·        In this regard, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be formed for development of Port with initial equity investment from three Major Ports in Tamil Nadu- VO Chidambaranar Port Trust, Chennai Port Trust and Kamarajar Port Limited.

Film festival on wildlife to begin in Shimla:

·        A three-day Woodpecker Environment and Wildlife Film Festival will begin at historic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla.

·        45 films, including several national award winning movies and five films from Himachal Pradesh will be screened at the festival, which is aimed at highlighting the environmental concerns

·        The focus of the festival will be critical environment and wildlife conservation issues like climate change, forest conservation, biodiversity and man-animal conflict and success stories will also be showcased in it.

·        The festival is being organized by WWF India in collaboration with CMSR foundation, Delhi with the support of Himachal Pradesh's Department of Language, Art and culture and Department of Forest.

NMCG to be launched tomorrow in Uttarakhand:

·        National Mission for Clean Ganga will be launched tomorrow at Haridwar in Uttrakhand.

·        Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti told that in all 231 projects will be launched in Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal on the bank of Ganga.

·        The projects will also be launched on the bank of Yamuna in Haryana and Delhi. Under the projects renovation and modernization of Ghats, redevelopment of sewage treatment plants, tree plantation and conservation of biodiversity will be undertaken.

Bombay, Calcutta, Madras High Courts renamed:

·        After a Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that the government has renamed the Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras High Courts.

·        These courts, established after an 1862 order by Queen Victoria of Great Britain, will now be called High Courts of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

·        However, the official release mentioned only the Mumbai and Chennai High Courts.

Rajasthan becomes first state to introduce minimum wages for part time workers:

·        Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to introduce minimum wages for part time workers. Labour Department has issued a notification in this regard.

·        According to notification, it is now mandatory to pay 50 per cent of the prescribed a day minimum wage to a person who works for less than four hours in a day.

·        With this notification, part time workers now come under the Minimum Wages Act 1948.

·        In another decision government has increased minimum wages in all categories of scheduled employments by Rs 104 per month.

Union Cabinet approves National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme:

·        The Union Cabinet has approved a National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) for providing apprenticeship training to over 50 lakh youngsters in order to create more jobs.

·        The Scheme has an outlay of 10,000 crore rupees and a target of training 50 lakh apprentices by 2019-20.

INTERNATIONAL:

World's oldest bank's shares hit record low:

·        The world's oldest surviving bank, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena's shares have dropped by nearly 30% to an all-time low.

·        This happened after European Central Bank on Monday warned it to shed €10 billion in bad loans.

·        The drop also dragged down other Italian banks, which are saddled with €360 billion of bad debt, one-third of the Eurozone's total.

World's tallest bonfire set ablaze in Norway:

·        The world's tallest bonfire, measuring 155.5 feet in height, was set ablaze in Norway during their midsummer festival Slinningsbalet.

·        As per reports, the bonfire was built using more than 30,000 pallets. Previously, the tallest bonfire recorded in the Guinness World Records was lit on April 30, 2007, in Boštanj, Slovenia and stood 142 feet tall.

Nikola Tesla’s statue provides free Wi-Fi:

·        A statue of Nikola Tesla in the Silicon Valley, US, provides free Wi-Fi to users.

·        The statue, unveiled in 2013, was a crowd-funded project, initiated by a company called Northern Imagination.

·        Also known as ‘Master of Lightning’, Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, best known for his developments in the alternating-current electrical system, widely used till date.

Theresa May wins first 1st round of UK Conservative Party Leadership vote:

·        British Interior Minister, Theresa May, has comfortably won the first round of voting to become the next Conservative leader and UK Prime Minister.

·        Mrs May got 165 of the 329 votes cast by Tory MPs, while junior Energy Minister, Andrea Leadsom, came second with 66 votes.

·        Former Defence Minister, Liam Fox, who came last with 16 votes, has been eliminated from the contest.

·        Further voting will narrow the field to two. The eventual outcome, decided by party members, is due on September 9.

China inducts its largest homegrown military transport plane:

·        China inducted its largest indigenously-built transport aircraft Y-20.

·        Y-20 which officially joined the PLA Air Force in Chengdu, is ideal for transporting cargo and personnel over long distances in diverse weather conditions and has a maximum take off weight of 200 tonnes.

·        The plane is comparable to the Russian-made IL-76 and the US C-17. PLA officials earlier said Y-20 is more advanced than the IL-476.

APPOINTMENTS:

Twitter adds former Facebook CTO to its board:

·        Micro-blogging website Twitter appointed former Facebook Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Bret Taylor to its Board of Directors.

·        Taylor, who is the Co-founder and the current CEO of the mobile word processing company 'Quip', is best-known as one of the founders of social networking startup 'FriendFeed', which was acquired by Facebook in 2009.

Sudarshan Sen appointed Executive Director of RBI:

·        Sudarshan Sen has been as Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

·        He will replace NS Vishwanathan who was elevated as Deputy Governor of RBI.

·        In his new role, Sudarshan Sen will look after Department of Banking Regulation, Department of Co-operative Bank Regulation and Department of Non-Banking Regulation.

Pattnaik's 100 sand 'Raths' set world record:

·        Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has set another world record by entering the Limca Book of Records by carving 100 sand chariots at the Puri beach in Odisha.

·        The Padma Shri awardee artist already has 20 world records to his name. Pattnaik said about 800 bags of sand were used within 2,500 sqft area to complete the 100 chariots.

Nasser Hussain sets Guinness Record for highest catch:

·        Former England captain Nasser Hussain has set a Guinness World Record for the highest catch of a cricket ball.

·        The 48-year-old caught the cricket ball that was dropped using a drone from a height of 150 feet in windy conditions at the Lord's stadium.

·        The ball reached an approximate speed of 119 km/h before landing safely in the cricketer’s hands.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:

Aditya Birla Fashion acquires global clothing brand Forever 21:

·        Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) acquired global clothing brand Forever 21 in the Indian market for 26 million US dollars.

·        Forever 21 has a network of more than 700 stores worldwide. Its India operations reported a turnover of 262 crore rupees in 2015-16.

TRAI launches app to track mobile data speed:

·        The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched an app called 'MySpeed' that measures mobile's data speed of the users and sends results to the regulatory body.

·        Available on Android and iOS platforms, it also sends device's location and other network information to TRAI. It does not share any personal information of its users and sends reports anonymously.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:

NASA's Juno Spacecraft successfully enters Jupiter’s orbit:

·        Juno spacecraft of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit.

·        Confirmation of a successful orbit insertion was received from Juno tracking data monitored at the navigation facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

·        Juno's main aim is to understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter. The spacecraft will also investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter's intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere and observe the planet's auroras.

Indian women’s relay team breaks national record:

·        The Indian women’s 4x100-metre relay team broke their own national record at the Kazakhstan National Athletics Championships in Almaty.

·        The team, which includes Rio-bound sprinter Dutee Chand, clocked 43.42 seconds, bettering their previous record of 44.03 seconds, registered in May.

·        The Indian team won the silver medal at the event, finishing behind hosts Kazakhstan.

Actress Noel Neill passes away aged 95:

·        Noel Neill, the first actress to play Superman's girlfriend, 'Lois Lane' on the big screen, passed away on Sunday aged 95.

·        Her first appearance as Superman's love interest was in 1948's movie serial, 'Superman'. She received the Golden Boot Award in the year 2004 and also has a life-size statue of her as 'Lois Lane' in Metropolis, Illinois.

Acclaimed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami dies:

·        Abbas Kiarostami, the critically acclaimed Iranian director died following a prolonged illness in Paris. He was 76. Kiarostami is survived by two sons.

·        His 1997 film Taste of Cherry won the prestigious Palme d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
