Commerce Ministry launches e-marketplace for government departments:
· The Commerce Ministry has launched an e-marketplace for online purchase of goods and services by all government ministries and departments.
· The move is aimed at making government procurement absolutely transparent, Commerce and Industry Minister NirmalaSitharaman said.
· The prices of goods and services will be on the portal and the departments can decide 'how many units they want', she added.
'SwachhBalSenas' for garbage-free Puducherry:
· To ensure a garbage-free Puducherry, the government will form 'SwachhBalSenas' to make children the watchdogs of cleanliness and prevent elders from littering.
· Children will be given yellow coloured whistles, which they will blow whenever they see elder throwing garbage, Lt Governor KiranBedi said.
· Beat constables in respective areas would help children carry out the work, she added.
Railways to unveil vintage hotels on Palace on Wheels:
· The Indian Railways has proposed to construct thematic vintage hotels on the original coaches of the luxury tourist train 'Palace on Wheels'.
· Each vintage hotel will reportedly have two-three coaches, to be built at an estimated cost of ₹16 crore.
· According to the Railways' heritage wing's proposal, the hotels-cum-restaurants would be set amid the ambience of an old station.
90-day paid leave for sexual harassment complainants:
· Women central government employees who have filed complaints of sexual harassment can now avail a paid leave of 90 days during the pendency of the inquiry.
· This leave will be over and above those already provided to central government employees. This is a relief for employees, who undergo the trauma of working in the presence of the accused, officials said.
Government launches online skill training platform:
· The Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry has launched an online portal 'India Skills Online', and four other initiatives under the 'Skill India' campaign.
· The website will provide free courses to aspirants registered for skill training schemes.
· It will also offer courses on soft skills, languages, digital literacy, orientation to regional cultures and entrepreneurship modules.
54.5% of India's disabled population literate:
· Around 54.5% (approximately 1.46 crore) of India's total disabled population of 2.68 crore is literate, according to the 2011 Census-based data released by the Registrar General of India (RGI).
· The data also revealed that among the literates who are disabled, 62.4% are males and 44.6% females.
· According to the last Census in 2001, 49.3% of India's disabled population was literate.
Railways launches special train for car freight:
· The Indian Railways has launched a special train for car freight called 'Auto Express'.
· Currently available from Gurgaon to Nidvanda, the train can run at 100 kmph, reducing travel time to 57 hours from the current 70 hours.
· With the new train, the vehicles transported between the two regions will increase from the current 2,000 to 6,000 units per month.
INTERNATIONAL:
UK PM Theresa May rebuilds cabinet for EU exit:
· UK PM Theresa May has made key changes in the cabinet, putting Brexit supporters in charge of negotiating the country's exit from the European Union.
· This includes the appointment of former PM candidate Andrea Leadsom as Environment Secretary and former London Mayor Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.
· May also sought time from the European Commission to finalise UK's negotiation strategy.
S Korea sets up task force for menu translations:
· According to reports, the South Korean government has set up a task force to remove 'incorrect' translations of Korean dishes from menus.
· The task force will work on standardised descriptions of Korean cuisine in English, Japanese and Chinese.
· Korean dishes are sometimes misrepresented - 'steak tartare' was reportedly referred to as 'six times' in a Korean menu.
UNESCO adds 9 sites to 'World Heritage List':
· UNESCO declared the Archaeological Site of Philippi in Greece and the Antequera Dolmens Site in Spain to be 'World Heritage Sites'.
· It added nine sites to its 'World Heritage List', including the Archaeological Site of Ani in Turkey, the Persian Qanat in Iran and Nan Madol in Micronesia. Notably, Bihar's Nalanda University was also added to the list.
UNESCO names 'World Heritage Sites in Danger':
· UNESCO declared five 'World Heritage Sites' in Libya to be in danger, citing damage caused by the conflict in the country as well as the threat of further damages.
· The Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz in Uzbekistan, the Old Towns of Djenné in Mali and Nan Madol in Micronesia were also declared 'World Heritage Sites in Danger'
APPOINTMENTS:
PemaKhandu sworn-in as Arunachal Pradesh CM:
· Congress leader PemaKhandu, son of late Chief Minister DorjeeKhandu, was today sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
· The 36-year-old leader replaces NabamTuki, who stepped down from the post.
· This comes after the Supreme Court annulled the Centre's imposition of President’s rule in the state and reinstated the former Tuki-led Congress government.
Indian-origin woman appointed to UK cabinet:
· Indian-origin UK MP Priti Patel has been appointed as the International Development Secretary in PM Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle.
· Following the appointment, Patel vowed to work for deepening international partnerships and creating jobs in the developing world.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
Amazon Founder is the world's 4th richest person:
· Jeff Bezos, CEO and Founder of Amazon.com, is currently the fourth richest person in the world with a net worth of $63.9 billion.
· Bezos, who launched Amazon on July 16 1995, ranks behind Bill Gates, Zara's Amancio Ortega, and Warren Buffett.
· The 52-year-old is also the founder of aerospace company Blue Origin and owner of Washington Post newspaper.
Manipur NGOs award women with most children:
· NGOs in Manipur conduct an annual competition and give cash prizes to women with the highest number of children.
· A 44-year-old housewife, SobitaMutum, won this year's award with 15 children.
· The competition is reportedly organised annually as Manipuris fear that the state will be swamped by migration.
· Currently, non-locals account for around 36% of the Manipur's 27.2 lakh population
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corporation acquires Yatra Online for $218 mn:
· Yatra Online, Inc. and Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corporation entered into a definitive merger agreement. The transaction values Yatra at an enterprise value of 218 million dollars (1458 crore rupees).
· Yatra in its statement said that it intends to be listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market under the symbol "YTRA" following completion of the transaction.
· The combined company will continue to be led by Yatra's experienced management team under the leadership of chief executive and co-founder Dhruv Shringi.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Army gets India-made Dhanush guns for user trial:
· Three indigenously-developed 155 mm 'Dhanush' artillery guns have been handed over to the Indian Army for user trial by the Jabalpur-based Gun Carriage Factory.
· Dhanush, a howitzer with a strike range of 38 km, has been developed using the design documents delivered to India as part of the Bofors gun deal, another official said.
South African super-telescope reveals distant galaxies and black holes:
· South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope showed off its phenomenal power by revealing 1,300 galaxies in a tiny corner of the universe where only 70 were known before.
· The image released yesterday was the first from MeerKAT, where 16 dishes were formally commissioned. When fully up and running in the 2020s, the SKA will allow astronomers to peer deeper into space in unparallelled detail.
· More than 20 countries are members of the SKA, including Britain which hosts the headquarters of the project.
Vijender wins Asia Pacific Super middleweight title:
· Indian professional boxer Vijender Singh became the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight champion after defeating Australia’s Kerry Hope in New Delhi by unanimous decision.
· Playing in his first professional bout in India, Vijender maintained his unbeaten record in professional boxing with a seventh consecutive victory.
· With the win, Vijender will break into WBO's top 15 world rankings.
India qualify for Davis Cup World Group playoff:
· India sealed a spot in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in their Group 1 tie against South Korea in Chandigarh.
· After Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni won their respective matches, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna made it 3-0 with a straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win.
