Hello everyone, in our Lesson 8, we learnt about the prefixes anti, antAnti, Ant represents the meanings against, opposed to. Today we shall see the prefix apo. Happy Reading :)

Day 9 : Apo

  • anti, ant - away; from
Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  1. apology (noun) =  an excuse
    • apo - Prefix = awaay
    • logy - Suffix = a subject of study
  2. apostrophe (noun) = the mark (') used to show that one or more letters or numbers have been left out.
    • apo - Prefix = from
    • strophe (strephein) - Root = to turn
Let's have a look at some more words with apo prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. apogee = the highest point of something, where it is greatest or most successful 
  2. apotheosis = a person has become a god
  3. apoplexy = sudden loss of powers of senses 
  4. apocope =  omission of the final sound of a word 
  5. apostate = someone who has given up their religion or left a political party
  6. apocrypha = writings or reports not considered genuine
  7. apologetic =  expressing or showing regretful acknowledgement of an offence or failure
Home Work :
Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
  1. hypo-
  2. mega-
  3. neo-
  4. micro-
a. small
