Topic 1 : "Shell shock at Pulgaon"
  • Shell shock - mental illness caused by experiences of war
  • Ammunition - bullets and bombs
  • High toll - huge suffering, deaths, or damage
  • Dump - a place where things of a particular type are stored, especially by an army
  • Appraisal - to examine something in order to judge
  • Inventory - a detailed list of all the things in a place
  • Eventually - in the end (after a long delay)
  • Evacuated - to remove (someone) from a place of danger to a safer place
  • Impact - effect or influence
  • Debris - broken or torn pieces of something larger
  • Scattered - throw in various random directions (due to explosion)
  • Depot - a place for the storage of large quantities of equipment
  • Virtually - nearly / almost
  • Feeding - supplying with material or power
  • Setback - something that happens that prevents a process from developing
  • Brass - complete confidence and lack of fear
  • Intense - of extreme force, degree, or strength
  • Audit - an official inspection of an organization's accounts
  • Procuring - to get something, especially after an effort
  • Concern - a worried or nervous feeling about something
  • Violation - an action that acts against something (especially a law, agreement, principle)
  • Prescribed - set by a rule or order
  • Disposal - the act of getting rid of something
  • Tarpaulin - waterproof cloth used as a covering
  • Tragedy - a very sad event or situation (especially one involving death or suffering)
  • Slightest - very small in amount
  • Lapse - a temporary failure
  • Devastating - highly destructive or damaging

Topic 2 : "The challenge of sustaining growth"
  • Sustaining - to continue for a period of time
  • Statistics - a collection of numerical facts or measurements
  • Sharp - happening suddenly, quickly, and strongly
  • Acceleration - increase in speed or rate
  • Downsized - to become smaller
  • Preceding - come before (something) in time
  • Significantly - in a way that is easy to see or by a large amount
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time / lengthy
  • Widespread - existing or happening in many places
  • Drought - a long period when there is no rain
  • Dampened - to make something less strong
  • Noteworthy - worth paying attention to
  • Provisional - for the present time but likely to change
  • Likely - probably
  • Downward - towards a lower place or level
  • In line with something - similar to something
  • End up - to finally be in a particular place or situation
  • Top of the heap - a position superior to everyone else (at the highest point)
  • Fiscal - relating to government revenue
  • Robust -  strong
  • Expenditure - the action of spending funds
  • Perspective - a particular way of considering something
  • Paint a more modest picture - to show / describe something in a small size / amount
  • Barely - only just
  • Nudging - to push something up gently
  • Projection - an estimation or guess about the future based on information that you have
  • Significant - sufficiently great / noteworthy
  • Strips - removes something
  • Thus - as a result of this / therefore
  • Contraction - the process of becoming smaller
  • Inflate - increase something by a large or excessive amount
  • Hinge - dependent on something
  • Monsoon - the season of heavy rain
  • Flooding - a situation in which an area is covered with water, especially from rain
  • Harvest - the time of year when crops are cut and collected from the fields
  • Fillip - something that causes a sudden improvement
  • Revival - an improvement in the condition
  • Onus - something that is one's duty or responsibility
  • Stimulus - something that causes growth or activity
  • Squarely - directly
  • Outlay - an amount of money spent on something
  • Uncertainty - a situation in which something is not known
  • Opts to - make a choice from a range of possibilities
