Hai  Friends I'm Kani. Here I'm sharing English Vocabulary from Editorial section of The Hindu dated 21st June  2016. Happy reading :)

Topic 1 : "The Centre’s big reform push"
  • Reform - make changes in (something, especially an institution or practice) in order to improve it
  • Acknowledged - recognized as being good or important
  • Edging up - going up in a list
  • Ease - to make or become less serious, difficult, unpleasant, painful, etc
  • Time is ripe - correct time to do something
  • Open the door to something - to make something possible / to allow something new to start
  • Diluting - making something weaker
  • Precondition - a condition that must be fulfilled before other things can happen or be done
  • Norms - an accepted standard or a way of doing something
  • Stickier - difficult to deal with
  • Resilient - able to quickly return to a previous good condition
  • Mercurial - changing suddenly and often
  • Appetite - a strong desire or liking for something
  • Fiscal - relating to government revenue, especially taxes
  • Constraint - a limitation or restriction
  • Purring - making a soft vibrant sound
  • Evident - clearly seen or understood
  • Surge - a sudden powerful forward or upward movement
  • Merely - just / only
  • Liberal - respecting and allowing many different types of beliefs or behaviour
  • Queuing up - a group of people eagerly waiting to do something
  • Domestic - related to one's own country
  • Booming - having a period of rapid increase in something good
  • Pharmaceutical - relating to the production of medicines
  • Bailout - an act of giving financial assistance to a failing business or economy to save it from collapse
  • Firm - a company or business
  • Entail - to make something necessary, or to involve something
  • Barriers - limitations
  • Deter - to prevent someone from doing something
  • Watering down - to make something less serious / stronger than it was
  • Stymied - to prevent something from happening or someone from achieving a purpose
  • Disputing - arguing
  • Irrespective of something - not taking (something) into account / regardless of something
  • Devil is usually in the detail - * used for saying that "something may seem simple, but in fact the details are complicated and likely to cause problems"

Topic 2 : "Olympics in the time of Zika"
  • Zika - a virus carried by mosquitoes that may be connected with birth defects such as microcephaly ( having an abnormally small head), if a pregnant woman is infected
  • Notwithstanding - although / in spite of
  • Convened - assembled / to bring together a group of people
  • Consequence - an unpleasant result or effect 
  • Intensive - involving a lot of effort or activity in a short period of time
  • Amplified - to increase the size or effect of something
  • Onus - something that is one's duty or responsibility
  • Ensure - to make sure that something is going to happen
  • Intensified - to become greater, more serious, or more extreme
  • Surveillance - close observation
  • Enhanced - increased / improved
  • Vector-control measures - methods to limit or destroy insects (mosquitoes)
  • Precautionary measures - actions that re done to prevent something unpleasant or dangerous happening
  • Needlestick - an accidental puncture of the skin with an unsterilized instrument
  • Infectious - likely to spread or influence others in a rapid manner
  • Foetus - a young human being before birth, after the organs have started to develop
  • Saliva - the liquid produced in your mouth to keep the mouth wet and to help to prepare food to be digested
  • Semen - the male reproductive fluid
  • Viral - relating to virus
  • Onset - the beginning of something, especially something unpleasant
  • Symptom - any feeling of illness or physical or mental change that is caused by a particular disease
  • Abstinence - not doing something (especially drinking alcohol or having sex)
  • Strategy - a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim
  • Evolving - developing slowly (step by step)
  • Caution - care taken to avoid dangers
  • Prevalent - existing very commonly or happening often
  • Endemic - regularly found and very common among a particular group or in a particular area (especially of a disease)
