1. Asia’s largest annual security forum Shangri-La Dialogue opens in Singapore
1. Asia’s largest annual security forum Shangri-La Dialogue was inaugurated in Singapore to talk about security issues in the Asia-Pacific region. The forum has been organised by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
2. The three day event will be attended by at least 20 Defence Ministers from Asia-Pacific countries including India represented by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
2. Commonwealth Boxing Council grants affiliation to Indian Boxing Council
1. The Indian Boxing Council (IBC) was granted affiliation by the Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) on 2 June 2016. The affiliation was unanimously endorsed by CBC.
2. IBC is a licensing body for professional boxers in India which has Vijender Singh among others on its roster.
3. The IBC so far conducted two fight cards and will hold its biggest event on 16 July 2016 in which Vijender Singh competes for the WBO Asia title.The CBC will formally register Raja as a Director in its Annual General Meeting scheduled in December 2016.
3. P Dhanapal re-elected as Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker
1. P Dhanapal and Pollachi V Jayaraman were unanimously re-elected as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the 15th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The two AIADMK leaders held the respective offices in the previous assembly also.
2. As Soon as the House assembled on 3 June 2016, the Protem Speaker S Semmalai announced Dhanapal as Speaker as he was the only person to file nomination for the post.
3. His name was proposed by AIADMK Chief and TN CM J Jayalalithaa and Finance Minister and Leader of the House O Panneerselvam.
4. P Sreeramakrishnan elected as Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly
1. P Sreeramakrishnan was on 3 June 2016 elected as the Speaker of the 14th legislative assembly of Kerala. He was the candidate of ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and a two-time legislator from Ponnani constituency.
2. In the voting held, he secured 92 votes against UDF's V.P. Sajeendran from Kunnathunadu constituency, who got 46 votes in the 140-member legislative assembly.
3. The only MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) O Rajagopal voted in favour of P Sreeramakrishnan whereas the Independent MLA PC George's vote was marked invalid.
5. India, Tunisia sign MoUs for co-operation in IT, handicrafts sector
1. India and Tunisia signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for co-operation in Information Technology and promotion of traditional handicrafts.
2. The MoUs were signed after the delegation level talks between the two countries in the presence of Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid in Tunis.
3. After the meet, the two nations also released a joint press statement saying that the entire gamut of bilateral as well global issues was discussed. The two sides had discussion on bilateral ties focused on economic partnership and adding new areas of collaboration in IT and education.
6. Navin Agarwal appointed as DG of NADA
1. Senior IPS officer Navin Agarwal was appointed Director General (DG)/ Chief Executive Officer (CEP) of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). His appointment was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
2. He has been appointed to the post for five years. Navin Agarwal is a 1986 batch IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre. Prior to this appointment he was working in his cadre state J&K.
7. Odisha becomes first state to give social welfare benefits to transgender community
1. Odisha became the first state in the country to give transgender people social welfare benefits – such as a housing, pension and food grains.
2. This move seeks to give the transgender community in the state same benefits as those living below the poverty line (BPL) in order to improve their overall social and economic status.
3. Members of the transgender community will be given BPL cards that will allow them to access benefits under various government welfare programmes. Henceforth they will get benefits such as free housing, pensions loans to start up their own businesses and 100 days of paid work annually.
8. India joins the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation
1. India has joined the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCoC), a global ballistic missile proliferation regime. India has joined the Code highlighting its readiness to further strengthen global non-proliferation objectives.
2. However, India has made it clear that it will not have any impact on the national security as well as country’s missile programmes.
