- Against all odds - If you achieve something against all odds, you achieve it although there were a lot of problems and you were not likely to succeed
- To turn the tide - to reverse the trend of events
- Consecutive - following each other continuously
- Term - the fixed period of time that something lasts for
- Defying - refuse to obey
- Incumbent - the person who has a particular official position
- Significant - important or noticeable
- Allies - supporters
- Adopted - choose to take up or follow (an idea, method, or an action)
- Strategy - a detailed plan for achieving success
- Relied - depended
- Disunity - disagreement within a group
- Collapse - to fall down suddenly
- Absolute - very great or to the largest degree possible
- Mentor - an experienced and trusted adviser
- Charismatic - having the special power that makes you able to influence other people
- Revealed - to make known or show something that is surprising or that was previously secret
- Shrewd - having or showing sharp powers of judgement
- Strategist - someone with a lot of skill and experience in planning (especially in military, political, or business matters)
- Dispelled - make (a doubt, feeling, or belief) disappear
- Rival - a person competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity
- Stitch together - to create or form something quickly or roughly
- Viable - capable of working successfully
- Alliance - an agreement to work with someone else to try to achieve the same thing
- Triumph - a great victory or achievement
- Incumbency - the period during which someone has a particular official position
- Mitigated - to make something less harmful, unpleasant, or bad
- Clutch - grasp (something) tightly
- Mandate - official permission for something to happen
- Subsidised - to pay part of the cost of something to keep the selling price low
- Maternity - the period during pregnancy and shortly after childbirth
- Infrastructure - the basic systems and services, such as transport and power supplies, that a country or organization uses in order to work effectively
- Hobble - to limit something
- Spotlight - public attention
- Recriminations - arguments between people who are blaming each other
- Verdict - Judgement
- Unresolved - not solved or ended (a problem or difficulty)

- Forge - to make or produce something, especially with some difficulty

- Misgiving - a feeling of doubt or worry about a future event
- Excuse-making - giving reasons to explain why you did something wrong
- Disaster - a sudden accident that causes great harm, damage, or death, or serious difficulty
- Praxis - the process of using a theory or something that you have learned in a practical way
- Realpolitik - a system of politics or principles based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations
- Significant - sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention
- Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote
- Cynicism - believing that people are only interested in themselves and are not sincere
- Alliance - a group of political parties who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
- Scared - frightened or worried

- Quibble - a slight objection or criticism
- Conviction - a strong opinion or belief
- Expedient - helpful or useful in a particular situation, but sometimes not morally acceptable
- Agenda - a list of aims or possible future achievements
- Obvious - easy to see, recognize, or understand
- Contradiction - a combination of statements, ideas, or features which are opposed to one another
- Floundering - to experience great difficulties or be completely unable to decide what to do or say next
- Firmness - the quality of being strong
- Pivot - the central or most important thing in a situation
- Incumbency - the holding of an office or the period during which one is held
- Essential - absolutely necessary / extremely important
- Defend - to protect someone or something against attack or criticism
- Squeamish - easily upset or shocked by things that you find unpleasant
- Have your back to the wall - to have very serious problems that limit the ways in which you can act

- Customises - modify (something) to suit a particular task

- Stipend - a particular amount of money that is paid regularly to someone
