- Waning - to become weaker in strength or influence
- Tide - the alternate rising and falling of the sea
- Relegation - assign to a lower position
- Former - the first of two people
- Run-off - a further competition / election, after a tie
- Reign - the period of rule of a king
- Repressive - to control what people do, especially by using force
- Notorious - famous for something bad
- Resuscitate - make (something) active again
- Populism - political ideas and activities that are intended to get the support of ordinary people by giving them what they want
- Succeed - to take an official job or position after someone else
- Setback - something that happens that delays or prevents a process from developing
- Ascendancy - a position of power, strength, or success
- Regime - government
- Relinquish - to give up something (power)
- Possibly - * used when something is not sure
- Referendum - a vote in which all the people in a country or an area are asked to give their opinion about an important political or social question
- Retain - to keep or continue to have something
- Meanwhile - until something expected happens / while something else is happening
- Impeachment - to make a formal statement that a public official did something wrong (related to his job)
- Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
- Mobilisation - to organize or prepare a group of people, for a purpose
- Upsurge - a sudden and usually large increase in something
- Elites - the richest, most powerful group in a society
- Skewed - suddenly changed direction or position
- Exacerbating - to make something that is already bad even worse
- Poverty - the condition of being extremely poor
- Statism - the principle that the government should own or control most of a country's industry and economy
- Fuelled - to make something active / more stronger
- Commodity - a product that can be traded / bought / sold
- Weaning - to make someone slowly stop using something that is bad for them
- Extraction - the process of removing something, especially by force
- Malfeasance - an example of dishonest and illegal behaviour, especially by a person in authority
- Crisis - a time of great disagreement, confusion, or suffering
- Garner - to collect something, usually after much work or with difficulty
- Successors - someone that comes after another person
- Cunning - clever at planning something so that you get what you want
- Efficacy - the ability of achieving something / to produce the intended result
- Recalibration - to change the way you do or think about something
- Boom - a period of sudden economic growth, especially one that results in a lot of money being made
- Charisma - a special power that some people have naturally that makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration

- Scrutiny - the careful and detailed examination of something in order to get information about it
- Hearing - an official meeting that is held to collect the facts about an event or problem
- Ascertain - to make sure of something
- Amendments - changes
- Laudable - praise worthy
- Curbing - controlling
- Transparent - open and honest
- Unaided - without any help from anyone else (independent)
- Thrive - to grow, develop, or be successful
- Bidder - someone who offers to pay a particular amount of money for something
- Implicit - suggested but not communicated directly
- Undermine - to make something less powerful
- Elitist - organized for the good of a few people who have special interests or abilities
- Unfettered - not limited by rules or any other controlling influence
- Upheld - confirm or support (something which has been questioned)
- Violated - to act against something
- Dissenting - strong difference of opinion on a particular subject
- Impinging on something - to have an effect on something
- Breaching - an act of breaking a law / agreement
- Merely - just / only
- Curious - interesting
- Verdict - judgement
- Precedent - the way that something has been done in the past that therefore shows that it is the correct way
- Hasty - to do something very hurriedly / urgently
- Interim - temporary
