General Awareness section of Railways RRB
Dear Readers,
With Railways exam around the corner, it is high time to brush up the syllabus. Today, I will be sharing how we should prepare for one of the most scoring section in any exam.
Trust me when I say general awareness exam is very scoring and at the same time least time consuming section. You either know or don’t know the answer to any general awareness question and this can be ascertained just by looking at the question. So, this saves a lot of time unlike other sections like reasoning Numerical Ability or Reasoning, where you have to actually solve questions first to calculate an answer.

Let us look at the various parts of this section and tackle them separately:

  1. Current Affairs-National & International
  2. History-Mostly India & World
  3. General Science
  4. Indian Economy
  5. Indian Geography
  6. Indian Constitution
  7. Indian Polity
  8. Computer
  9. Miscellaneous

Current Affairs

With the rise of smartphones, it's so easy to read Current Affairs on the go. We update GK Digest Android Application, that provides regular current affairs along with exclusive motes in PDF format. Install GK Digest App here.

Newspaper is the key to master current affairs. Being a commerce graduate, I am biased towards The Economic Times which is a simple and no-nonsense kind of newspaper. All you can find is economic news which is actually useful for most of the competitive exam. The Hindu is also one of the favorite newspapers of all those who prepare for competitive exams. Also, make it a point to discuss the current affairs or news with anyone who is familiar with it. For e.g. my mother watches news channels all day, she has all the whereabouts of India or the world, so I keep asking and sharing with her. This has helped me enormously to revise my general awareness. A monthly edition of “GK Digest” would also serve the purpose.

For basic general science I would recommend the book “Lucent’s General Knowledge
History- The more you read, the less it will be. I would suggest reading few topics daily so that subconsciously your mind remembers few important things.

General Science

For Physics, basic topics till 10th standard like Unit, motion, work, energy and power, Gravitation and pressure, heat, wave , light , electricity and various units of measurement.

For Chemistry, if you belong to a science background then you must be well-versed with the basics chemistry. But for someone from commerce background like me, I would suggest to read basic facts about common metals and the basics atomic structures.

For Biology- The system of Human Body, nutrients, human blood, vitamins and their deficiencies and human diseases.

Indian Economy

Capitalist, Socialist and mixed economy, agriculture, land reforms, national income and various terms related to it (GNP, GGDP, NDP, NNP, MP, FC, Indirect tax, depreciation), five year plans, banking, budget, tax, industries.

Indian Geography

The solar system, latitudes and longitudes, various layers of the earth (crust, mantle and core), structure of the atmosphere (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere) , famous rivers of India and world, the various seasons in India, Soils in India, kharif and rabi crops and the most important topic- Railways in India.

Indian Constitution & Polity

All 28 states & union territories, their capitals and their chief ministers, fundamental rights and duties, the preamble, the parliament of India, the supreme court, the high court, finance commission, planning commission and the special rights allocated to Jammu & Kashmir.

Computer

This section is probably the easiest for most of the candidates when it comes to SSC and RRB exams or even bank exams. It would basically include few important names like Charles Babage, Blaise Pascal, Herman Holorith, Jon Von Newman and their inventions, definition of computer, five generations of computer, types of computers (micro, main, main frame and super), programming languages, hardware, software, CPU and its components (ALU, Control Unit and Registers), input and output, memory and its units and few common abbreviations related to computer.

Miscellaneous

This topic covers all common things like first in India eg. first President of India, first Prime Minister of India, first Speaker of Lok Sabha etc, famous rivers , lakes, mountains, dams, airport, railway stations etc., famous organizations and their headquarters, important national and international days, world’s heritage sites , famous tourist spots, famous folk dances of Indian states, national awards like Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Gallantry Awards famous books and their authors, sports and terminology related to it and Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
So, with 18252 vacancies, all of you have a fair chance if you give your 100% and study with sheer hard-work, dedication and perseverance. Always remember, perseverance is the secret of all triumphs.

Hope this article will help you.
