Topic 1 : "Gearing up for the Zika threat"
- Gearing up - to prepare for something that you have to do
- Congenital - a disease exists from birth
- Malformations - a condition in which a part of the body is wrongly formed
- Emergency - a serious, unexpected, and dangerous situation requiring immediate action
- Outbreak - a sudden occurrence of something dangerous (war or disease)
- Foetal - related to the child in the womb (unborn)
- Immune system - the cells and tissues in the body that make it able to protect itself against infection
- Placenta - the temporary organ that feeds a developing baby inside its mother's womb
- Epidemic - a situation in which a large number of people get the same disease at the same time
- Microcephaly - abnormal smallness of the head
- Ethical - relating to moral principles
- Stray - not in the right place
- Urged - recommended (something) strongly
- Endemic - a disease regularly found among particular people or in a certain area
- Unreliable - not able to be trusted or believed
- Virology - the branch of science that deals with the study of viruses
- Surveillance - close observation
- Prevalence - existing very commonly or happening often
- Contingency - something that might possibly happen in the future (usually causing problems)

- Criminalise - turn (someone) into a criminal by making their activities illegal
- Medieval - uncivilized
- Prejudice - an unfair and unreasonable opinion
- Invalidate - to prove that an opinion is wrong
- Resurrected - restore to life
- Declined - politely refuse
- Retrograde - returning to older and worse conditions
- Uphold - confirm or support
- Contentious - controversial
- Verdict - judgement
- Paved the way - to make something possible
- Comprehensive - complete (including everything that is necessary)
- Orientation - the particular things that a person prefers
- Traverse - travel across something
- Curative - cause to get better
- Essentially - importantly
- Aggrieved - unhappy and angry because of unfair treatment
- Litigants - people who are fighting a legal case
- Consensual - with the willing agreement of all the people involved
- Inflict - to force someone to experience something very unpleasant
- Intervening - take part in something to prevent or alter a result
- Jurisprudence - a legal system
- Transgender - a person whose sexuality or gender is not readily characterized as male or female
- Entitled - to give someone the right to do something
- Criticism - the act of saying that something or someone is bad
- Evidence - anything that can be used to prove something
- Harassment - the act of continuously abusing, insulting, or harming
- Discrimination - treating somebody differently (in a worse way) from the way in which you treat other people
- Insignificant - too small or unimportant to consider
- Rebuttal - a statement that says that something is not true
- Minuscule - extremely small (tiny)
- Remedy - a successful way of curing a problem or difficulty
- Consequences - a result or effect
