Today is the day when? (4th November)

Dear Readers,

As we all know in SSC exams General Studies played an important role in getting more marks from the cut off.  To get well verse with GS you all have to work really hard,as GS is the only subject which cannot be completed in a day, it needs time.

For this, we are starting a new initiative named " Today is the day when?", in which we will post what important events took place in the history of India on the given day.

On this day in 1918,Aurangzeb, [Alamgir], great Mughal emperor was born at Dohad in Gujarat.

Important Facts on Aurangzeb

a) His second coronation took place when he defeated Dara (1659), his brother.

b) He took the title of Alamgar in 1659.

c) He was also called as Zinda Pir the living saint.

d) He ended the celebration of Navroz Festival.

e) He forbade music in the court.

f) He ended Jarokha Darsha , use of almanacs and weighing of the emperor.

g) Aurangzeb compiled Fatwa-i-Alamgir.

h) Jaziya was reintroduced. 

i) Only monument associated with Aurangzeb is Bibi Ka Makbara which is the tomb of his wife Rabbia-ud-Daura is Aurangabad.He also built the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore.

a) On 4th November,1889, Jamnalal Bajaj, industrialist, social reformer and freedom fighter, was born in the village of Kashi-Ka-Bas near Jaipur. 

b) He was also a close associate and follower of Mahatma Gandhi. 

c) He founded the Bajaj Group of companies in 1926. 

The group now has 24 companies, including 6 listed companies. 

d) Several institutions in India bears his name, including the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. 

e) Jamnalal Bajaj Award was established in 1978 by the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation are given away each year on his birth anniversary.

In 1936, Shankutala Devi, great mathematician, was born. She was an Indian writer and mental calculator, popularly known as the "human computer".

She won the 'Distinguished Woman of the Year Award' in 1969, from the University of Philippines along with a gold medal. 

In 1988, she was honored with the 'Ramanujan  Mathematical Genius Award' in Washington D.C., conferred to her by the-then Indian Ambassador to US. Her name was listed in the '1995 Guinness Book of World Records' edition for her outstanding mathematical feat where she beat the world's fastest computer at multiplying two thirteen digit numbers.

A month before her death, she was honored with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in Mumbai, in 2013.

In 1915, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta also refered as the ""Lion of Bombay"" died in Bombay. He was founder of the English newspaper, ""Bombay Chronicle"", and was knighted in 1904.

In 1954, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute established at Darjiling.

In 1970, Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, the great Kathak dance master and King of India, passed away.
