A web server is a computer program that serves the requested HTML pages or files. The server computer will deliver those web pages to the computers that request them and may also do other processing with the web pages, such as calculations and entries into database.

Presently, there are five major web servers commonly used for hosting websites.

Apache HTTP Server: It is developed by Apache Software Foundation. The Apache HTTP Server is the most popular web hosting server in the world.

Internet Information Service (IIS): Internet Information Server is produced by Microsoft and is known to be a very high-performance web hosting server. It is easily administrable and integrated with the windows platforms.

Lighttpd: It is a free web hosting server distributed under the license of BSD. It is known as secure, fast, reliable and power efficient CPU. Lighttpd web servers are compatible with windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Unix and Solaris operating systems.

Sun Java System Web Server: This is produced by Sun Microsystems, is not a open source server. It supports windows, Linux and Unix. This web hosting server is suitable medium and large website hosting.

Jigsaw Server: This is a free open server that comes straight directly from World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This server is written in Java, and supports many software and platforms like Linux, Unix, windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD etc.
