Play Safe: English

October 26, 2015

Good Afternoon BA'ians,

Today we will be discussing the English section which made a huge difference in the preliminary examination. When the score card of preliminary exam came, it left many students confused with the increase in the individual cut-off and specially English. Most of the students find it difficult not because they don't know, but because you can never be 100% sure with your number of attempts. You should play safe and get away easily otherwise it may kill your time and will cost you another year. Let us have a look at the syllabus which will be almost similar to the previous year.
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Cloze Test
  • Fillers
  • Sentence Improvement
  • Error Detection
  • Para-jumbles

From the above diagram, it is obvious that the questions are pretty much similar. Now comes the part which everyone would like to know i.e. the individual cut-off. The preliminary exam showed a bit high cut-off but the Mains exam will be a bit tougher and the we can have an idea only after exam. The last year cut-off has been given below.
IBPS PO 2014 Cut-Off
Overall Cut-Off
Sectional Cut-Off
The break up of questions will remain same as previous year and you can expect it to be tougher than preliminary. In preliminary exam, questions were easier and the questions were not time consuming. But the Mains exam may give you a hard time. If you have been practising for a while then it's good, but if you are not then don't get too much involved. Just play a safe game and move forward. Let's have a look at the break up of the English section.
English is a section full of misteries. It is really hard to determine what to do and what not to. But still, most of the students go for Fillers or Cloze Test. these are the topics that can give you good marks if you are good at vocabulary. This is the test of your vocabulary and you will only be able to do it untill unless you have a reading habit otherwise you will score average just like others.
Once you are done with Cloze test and Fillers, then you should go for Antonyms and Synonyms. These are the part of vocabulary and can be done with less time. And do remember, for answering Antonyms and Synonyms, read the statement first to answer. Many students make this mistake because sometimes the meaning of the word changes with the usage. And if are not in practice with Reading Comprehension, then no need to break your head. Just do the antonyms and synonyms and go for the next.
Now comes the tricky part. After completing the above mentioned topics, go for Parajumbles. Now you must be thinking that Parajumbles are difficult and time consuming. If you are comfortable doing it, then go for it otherwise try to identify the the first statement and swithch to other topics. Usually First statement is easy to find. And if you feel like doing the Error Detection and Sentence Improvement, then go for it other wise you can switch the section.
This is the section where no one can be 100% sure. The wise person will score sufficient and move forward playing it safely. But if in case you try to get into it, then believe us you will not be able to recover in the 120 mins duration. So be cautious and play safe.
