Happy Dushehra

October 22, 2015

Good Morning Friends,
First of all a very Happy Vijaydashmi to you all. May God bless on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra and may this festival  Make you capable of defeating all evils in your life. We hope that you all know why we celebrate this occasion. Yes you are right, this festival is celebrated to mark the victory of Goodness over Evil. From childhood, we have seen ramlila and many more things, but we have never got to the roots. Let us find some more interesting facts and let us have a look at the Ravanas(Evil) around us.

Ravana is the primary antagonist in the Hindu epic Ramayana, where he is depicted as the king of Lanka. He is described as a follower of Shiva, a great scholar, a capable ruler and a maestro of the veena, but someone who wished to overpower the devas. His ten heads represent his knowledge of the six shastras and the four Vedas.
After having so much knowledge and considered to be the Shreshtha among all, what happened to him. He did some things that led to his death. This clearly shows that it is not important how much knowledge you have, but how you are using that knowledge. The effigy of Ravana that we burn every year, the ten Heads depict the ten evils mentioned below:
  • Kama vasana (Lust)
  • Krodha (Anger)
  • Moha (Attraction)
  • Lobha (Greed)
  • Mada (Over Pride)
  • Matsara (Jealousy)
  • Swartha (Selfishness)
  • Anyaaya (Injustice)
  • Amanavata (Cruelty)
  • Ahankara (Ego).

Meghnaad
Indrajit or Meghanada was a prince of Lanka and a conqueror of Indra Loka(heaven). He was mentioned in the Indian epic Ramayana as the son of king Ravana. Indrajit played an active role in the great war between Rama and Ravana. He was said to be invincible in battle be
cause of a Yajna he used to perform before every battle. He is considered as the most powerful and the only warrior ever had the three ultimate weapons of Trimurti i.e.Brahmanda astra, Vaishnava astra and Pashupatastra.
Kumbhakarna
Kumbhakarna is a rakshasa and younger brother of Ravana in the Indian epic Ramayana. Despite his monstrous size and great hunger, he was described to be of good character, though he killed and ate many monks just to show his power. When the time came for asking a boon (blessing) from Brahma, his tongue was tied by goddess Saraswati (acting on Indra's request). So instead of asking "Indraasana" (seat of Indra), he asked for "Nidraasana" (bed for sleeping). It is also said he intended to ask for Nirdevatvam (annihilation of the Devas) and instead asked for Nidravatvam (sleep). His request was granted. But his brother Ravana asked Brahma to undo this boon as it was in reality a curse.
These are the three effigies that we burn on the occasion of Dushehra. Why do we burn them? They symbolizes the evil and at this point of year, we all destroy them. Inspite of having so much knowledge and having so much grace, they all had evil in their mind and you know how it ends. A student can learn a lot from these stories. So let us pledge that we will not let the evil come in our way.
