- Government has cancelled the registration of the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Greenpeace India under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for allegedly working against country's economic progress

- The move will make the NGO ineligible to receive funds from abroad that could force it to close down operations.
- Delhi High Court allows permanent commission for women in Indian Navy.

- This means that women can now stay with the Indian Navy till they retire.
- Note : The Army and Air Force allow permanent commission for women, but the Navy has limited women officers only to short service commission of 14 years.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today released a Commemorative coin and a Circulation coin in honour of former President of India Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

- Note : The Commemorative coin is of Rs 125 and the circular coin of Rs 10.
- About Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
- Dr Radhakrishnan was the second President of India, educationist, teacher and philosopher.
- Teachers' Day is celebrated in his memory (on his Birth Day - 5th September).
- Note : Tomorrow is his 125th birthday.
- 18 crore bank accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and 15.74 crore Rupay Debit cards have been issued to the account holders so far.

- Over 22,000 crore rupees have been deposited in the bank accounts since the launch of the scheme.
- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposes compensation to consumers for callsdrops.

- Indian-American Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri has been selected for the prestigious 2014 National Humanities Medal.

- This award would be presented to her by US President Barack Obama next week.
- About National Humanities Medal :
- It is an American award that gives annual recognition to several people, institutions or groups that have helped in deepening of the nation’s understanding of humanities.
- These medals are usually conferred by the US President.
- The first National Humanities Medal was awarded in 1996.
- Since then, there have been 175 recipients, 163 individuals and 12 organisations, including this year's.
