International Affairs
  • The United Nations General Assembly today overwhelmingly approved a Palestinian resolution that will allow Palestine to fly its flag at U.N. headquarters, a move that infuriated Israel but which the Palestinians described as a step toward U.N. membership.
    • There were 119 votes in favor (including India) out of 193 UN members.
    • United States and Israel were among eight countries voted against the Palestinian-drafted resolution.
National Affairs
  • The nation salutes its immortal martyrs on the Golden Jubilee of Indian Armed Forces'
    victory against Pakistan in the Great 'Battle of Phillora' that took place this day in1965.
    • The Commanding Officer of Indian Army's 17 HORSE, Lt Col A. B. Tarapore was conferred with the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his unparalleled valour.
  • On this day in 1893 Swami Vivekananda went to USA and addressed the Parliament of World's Relgions in Chicago.
    • This was the first World's Parliament of Religions and it was held from 11 to 27 September 1893.
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announces that the Government has decided to bring 64 files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the public domain.
    • The files would be preserved and displayed in Kolkata police Museum from Friday and would be open for people. 
  • Union power minister Piyush Goyal kick starts Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna in Uttar Pradesh by inaugurating it in Basti district of the state.
  • A special MCOCA court has convicted 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts. One accused was acquitted.
    • Quantum of punishment will be announced on 14th of this month.
    • As per the prosecution's case, as many as 188 people were killed and over 800 injured when serial explosions ripped apart the first class compartments of Mumbai's suburban trains on 11 July, 2006.

Business & Economy
  • Under pressure to rein in retail prices of pulses that have shot up to Rs 155 per kg, the government today decided to import additional 5,000 tonnes of tur dal to boost domestic availability.
    • Import of 10,000 tonnes of tur and urad dal is already in the pipeline and the first consignment will reach by September 23.
  • Renowned water policy expert Ramaswamy R. Iyer passed away.
    • He was known for producing a rich body of commentary on water policy and environmental issues.
Awards & Honors
  • US President Barack Obama presented the prestigious National Humanities Medal to Pulitzer Prize winning Indian Bengali American author, Jhumpa Lahiri, in recognition of her beautifully wrought narratives highlighting Indian-American experience.
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Her debut short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies (1999), won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
      • She is a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama.
      • Her book The Lowland, published in 2013, was a nominee for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Award for Fiction.
  • India ended their Commonwealth Youth Games campaign in style by winning two out of the four gold on offer on the concluding day and finishing fifth in the overall medal tally today.
    • The Indians clinched both the boys and girls tennis singles titles through Sasi Kumar Mukund and Dhruthi Tatachar Venugopal, following their mixed doubles success together earlier.

      • Australia (24 gold, 19 silver, 19 bronze)
      • South Africa (13 gold, 7 silver, 15 bronze)
      • England (12 gold, 16 silver, 16 bronze)
