International Affairs
  • Today (4th July) is Independence Day of United States.
    • This day commemorates  the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire.
  • Today (1st Saturday of July ) is International Day of Cooperatives.
    • This day celebrates the co-operative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance.
    • Theme for the year 2015 : Equality (Choose co-operative, choose equality)

National Affairs
  • The government is going to convert 90,000 kms of country's national highways into green corridors, for this it is planning to create at least 1,000 contractors responsible for planting trees.
    • If the cost of road construction comes to around Rs 1 lakh crore, then Rs 1,000 crore will go for plantation.
    • Transport and Highways Minister : Nitin Gadkari.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Government has agreed to give in-principle approval to give ownership rights to aasami pattedar or lease holders of agriculture lands
    • The decision is expected to benefit lakhs of landless small farmers.
    • The present proposal will give them the ownership right​ as most of them are totally landless​.​ ​
    • The decision was taken on the basis of recommendations of the Revenue committee that was set up by the government in 2012.

  • Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University Dr Suranjan Das removed from his post .
    • Prof. Sugata Marjit has been nominated for the post of Vice Chancellor of the University.

Banking & Economy
  • BSNL launched its mobile wallet SpeedPay.
    • The service was launched by Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
    • It comes with a cash withdrawal option so you can use it to send money to other people who can then use SpeedPay to withdraw cash from a bank even without an account.
    • Customers will be charged a 1% transaction fee for transferring money to a bank account of withdrawing it. 
    • There will be no charges for wallet to wallet transfers and while the daily limit for cash withdrawal is Rs 5,000 in the case of verified customers that can go up to Rs 1 lakh. 
    • Currently BSNL has tied up with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank to roll out the service.

  • Former Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal passed away.
    • He was the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from 1st November 2005 to 13th January 2007.

  • Four Indian Americans were honoured with the 2015 Great Immigrants: The Pride of America award by Carnegie Corporation of New York. 
    • They are :

Business & Economy
  • Airbus Helicopters and Mahindra Defence, a part of Mahindra Group, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a joint venture to produce helicopters in India and jointly bid for defence contracts in India under the government's Make in India programme.

Sports
  • Indian‬ Women's Hockey team has defeated Japan by 1-0 to achieve 5th place in the World League semi-final at Antwerp, Belgium today.
    • This win has enhanced the hopes of Indian team to qualify for next year's Rio Olympics.
  • Australia's injury-plagued paceman Ryan Harris announced his immediate retirement from all forms of cricket, dealing a major setback to his team's defence of the Ashes starting in England next week.

Careers
  • UPSC declares results of Civil Services Examination, 2014.
    • Women bag top four positions.
    • Ira Singhal tops the examination, while Renu Raj has secured the second rank and Nidhi Gupta has got the third position.
    • A total of 1,236 candidates have been recommended for appointment into the prestigious IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services.
