Success Comes To Those Who Dare And Act - Saurabh Shekhar (PO in SBBJ)

April 23, 2015

Success, it doesn’t come easily and the price has to be paid. You need to forget friends, festivals, weekend outings, overcome failures, stay persistent and then you may taste success.

This story is for you readers to decide if it is a success story or not, but if this makes you even a cent more motivated, I will consider this a successful writing.
I am a 2012 engineering graduate from a college no one has ever heard of but somehow I got a job in Ericsson in December 2012. How I landed there is another story to share.  It didn’t take long for me to realize that I am not meant for telecom industry why is that? It is yet another story. I wanted to do something big, something great. I thought I will either go for job in Banking sector or for MBA for higher studies.
So, it was January 2014 I started to prepare for the competitive exams. It was tough, I had to slog in night shifts then sleep and then study and then back to office in nights. I had to work weekends as well. That left very little time to study. Yet I tried. April 2014 came SBI PO form and this time my preparation got a target for the first time. I gave it all I had for the preparation. Office – sleep – study – office was my routine. Social life went zero, old friends kept leaving Bangalore for job in other cities or got busy. I couldn’t stay in touch with them as I had to study, no time to make new friends as well. It was a solitary life.  You can imagine a life where you sleep in morning at 6, wake up at 12PM and then alone you roam in the house brushing and then drag yourself to the kitchen to cook and later eat alone. After that, sit to study with whatever time is left.

Some colleagues used to ask me for group outings on weekends and I kept denying that they stopped asking. Later, I could see their outing pics, how much they enjoyed. There were times when I felt I had no life. I have seen people around me celebrating festivals when I had to sit alone because I had detached myself from them all.
This was a routine and I didn’t know where this will take me but I kept doing it.

Then came the failures, one following the other.  I couldn’t clear SBI PO, when marks came later I had cleard the overall cut off but missed DI cut off. I failed RBI Officers grade B by 2 Marks short in GA . I kept going, kept studying. There were times when I felt low that I couldn’t clear them, am I that weak? But I had one thing always in me, the belief that I can do whatever I put my mind on, its just a matter of time and I will get it. So, I kept doing what I was doing. Months passed and came October for IBPS, when marks came later, couldn’t clear cut off my 1 mark. Can you believe it? One mark??  That was the time I was devastated.

I mean I was studying continuously, from the best books around, I was great in Verbal section, had even thought of MBA and I couldn’t clear even written cut off of any exam??

By the time IBPS marks had come, I had given two more exams, SBI associate and CAT 2014.
Yes! I know, how can I be so audacious to write these two?  I had attempted only 113 questions in SBI associate so I was not sure it was good or not, because no one I heard of later, attempted less than 113.

I was continuously failing. Exam after exam, braving failure after failure, but I never quit, I tried and kept trying and suddenly I started to win. December 27, 2014 CAT 96%ile, that was a shocking surprise for a boy who couldn’t clear any exam in the whole year and suddenly he was in the league of the greatest MBA aspirants of the country.

That was the great day, when I realized , what people say about hard work eventually paying, about perseverance , about its just a matter of time if you deserve it, all of this was true.
February 2015, SBI associate results came and that was it. I had cleared the written with just 113 marks, accuracy does matter, and now I had an interview scheduled.

Last 3 months I have spent giving SBI associate interview, various IIMs and IITs interviews for MBA.
When the SBI associate result came, with those 113 marks and an awesome Interview, I got my first preference SBBJ. This was the first result where Adobe reader didn’t take any time before flashing my roll number on screen.
Now, I am waiting for IIM results as well. Some of you may thing why share this about CAT and IIM and stuff, when all we want to eat is banking. But I felt like saying so.
The type of result is not important, the effort is.
Believe in yourself, you are the key to your own success. All the hard work, all the solitary effort pays eventually and now all I do is rest and enjoy. Get back to the same old friends from whom I had detached myself and now I am being seen as an example among them. Not an example of some celebrity but a simple example they can relate with and get inspired from. This is the best feeling which you get.

If  I can do it, believe me, you can easily do it. You all are a lot better than me at all this. Just believe in you and never quit, ever. It all comes back to you eventually.
Be honest, be humble and always be the hardest worker in the room.
