The govenrment has approved 4 names for elevation as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.  The four appointed judges are :
  • Justice Aniruddha Bose : Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court. His parent high court is Calcutta. He is at number 12 in all-India seniority of judges.
  • Justice A S Bopanna : Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. His parent high court is Karnataka. He is at number 36 in all-India seniority of judges.
  • Justice B R Gavai : Judge of the Bombay High Court. He is the incumbent Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
    • Important Note : Gavai will be the 2nd Dalit Chief Justice of India after K G Balakrishnan.
  • Justice Surya Kant : Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.  He had been the subject of controversy over a letter written by Justice (now retired) A.K. Goel to then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. Justice Goel, then an apex court judge, had disagreed with the proposal to elevate Justice Kant as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. However, the Misra Collegium, in a notification dated October 3, went ahead with his elevation.
These names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. The 5-member Collegium is headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi

Important Note : As of now, the supreme court is functioning with 27 judges. With this new approval, the total number of judges becomes 31, including the Chief Justice. With this, the court will reach its full sanctioned judicial strength of 31 judges
