- Today is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

- This day is an annual celebration of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's principles.
- This year marks the 68th year of the celebration, which was first officially celebrated in 1948.
- Important Note : The day is also the birth anniversary of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)'s founder Henry Dunant.

- He won first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
- Today is World Thalassemia Day.

- World Thalassemia Day is celebrated every year on 8th of May to increase the awareness about this disease among common public all through the world.
- About Thalassemia :
- Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorder which gets inherited from parents to the children through genes.
- It causes weakening and destruction of the red blood cells, affects the formation of hemoglobin in the body and causes mild or severe anemia.
- Theme of World Thalassaemia Day 2020 : ‘The dawning of a new era for thalassaemia: Time for a global effort to make novel therapies accessible and affordable to patients’.
- The United Nations and partner agencies have launched a 6.7 billion US dollar global appeal to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, more than trebling an earlier appeal made by the UN chief, with special focus on more vulnerable countries and combating food insecurity and gender-based violence.

- The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock launched the appeal yesterday and a global plan to fight the COVID-19 in fragile countries.
- Health Ministry today said that 16,540 people have been recovered till now and the recovery rate of Covid 19 in India is 29.36 per cent.

- 216 districts have not reported any case till date, 42 districts have no fresh cases in last 28 days and 29 districts have no fresh cases in the last 21 days.
- Cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in the country has climbed to 56,342 while the death toll stands at 1886.
- In the last 24 hours, 3,390 new cases have come up and 1,273 people have been recovered.
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today inaugurated the Link Road to Kailash Mansarovar via video conferencing.

- The link road connects Dharchula to Lipulekh, China Border which is known as Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra Route.
- The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advanced) for admission to IITs will be conducted on August 23, the HRD Ministry announced today.

- The exam was earlier scheduled to be held on May 17, but was deferred due to the coronavirus lockdown.
- Two days ago, the government had announced to hold the JEE-Mains from July 18 to July 23.
- Aarogya Setu became the 7th most downloaded non-game app worldwide in April.

- Earlier, the government had said that Aarogya Setu had close to 90 million downloads by May 4.
- Note : Zoom was the most downloaded non-game app worldwide with close to 131 million installs, a 60 times growth from April 2019.
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has installed its Ultra Violet disinfection chamber at the Cochin International Airport in Kerala.
- The Government of India and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) signed a US$ 500 million “COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health Systems Preparedness Project” today to help India to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen its public health preparedness.

- This is the first ever health sector support from the Bank to India.
- American business and financial services company, Moody's has said India is expected to see 0% GDP growth in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic while the fiscal deficit may rise to 5.5% of GDP.

- The agency added that the growth may bounce back to 6.6% in 2021-22.
- It has also projected that government debt ratios may rise to around 81% of GDP over next few years.
- Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitaraman launched INR-USD Futures and Options contracts on the two International Exchanges, viz BSE’s India INX and NSE’s NSE-IFSC, at GIFT International Financial Services Centre at Gandhinagar today through video conference.

- Over the last decade or so a significant market share in financial services related to India has moved to other international financial centres. Bringing this business to India is clearly beneficial in terms of economic activity and employment gains for India.
- The launch of INR-USD contracts at the exchanges in GIFT-IFSC is a step in this direction.
- This will be available 22 hours across all time zones for all global participants from GIFT IFSC.
- Former Health Minister of Greece and heart surgeon Dimitris Kremastinos (78) died after contracting coronavirus.

- In Greece, more than 2,600 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded and over 140 deaths have been reported.
- Bollywood Actress Dia Mirza's tenure as United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) National Goodwill Ambassador has been extended till the year 2022.
