- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has suggested world leaders to send video statements for the world body's 75th annual September meeting this year as there is 'high unlikely' chances that they will be able to travel to New York, the UN Headquarters during the Corona virus pandemic.

- Note : This year was expected to bring an especially large number of leaders to the UN headquarters to celebrate the founding of the United Nations in 1945 on the ashes of World War II.
- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that Cyclone Amphan has crossed West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans.

- As per IMD, the cyclone is expected to make the landfall with a maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph.
- The number of people who have benefitted under the Centre's Ayushman Bharat Scheme has crossed the one crore-mark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today.
- Union Cabinet has approved Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

- The scheme aims to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries section in the country.
- It will be implemented at a total investment over Rs. 20 thousand crore .
- The investment will comprise of Central share of 9 thousand 407 crore rupees, State share of Rs. 4,880 crore and beneficiaries' share of Rs 5,763 crore.
- The scheme will be implemented during a period of five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25. The scheme will address the critical gaps in the fisheries sector and realize its potential.
- Union Cabinet has approved extension of Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) for the welfare of and to enable old age income security for senior citizens.

- The scheme has been extended up to 31st March, 2023 for further period of three years beyond 31st March, 2020.
- PMVVY is a social security scheme for senior citizens intended to give an assured minimum pension to them based on an assured return on the purchase price or subion amount.
- Facebook has launched a new feature called 'Shops' to let small businesses set up a single online store on the platform and Instagram for free to help them amid the COVID-19 crisis.

- The shops will be supported by third-party software like Shopify and BigCommerce.
- The stores will be visible on Instagram profiles, Facebook's business pages and through targetted ads.
- US healthcare conglomerate Johnson & Johnson has announced it would stop selling its talcum-based baby powder in the US and Canada, citing a decline in demand.

- The move comes as J&J faces over 16,000 lawsuits from consumers claiming its talc products, including Johnson's Baby Powder, caused their cancer.
- Union Cabinet today given approval to the proposal of the Ministry of Finance to launch a new Special Liquidity Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and Housing Finance Companies (HFCs) to improve liquidity position of the NBFCs or HFCs.

- The direct financial implication for the Government is five crore rupees, which may be the equity contribution to the Special Purpose Vehicle, SPV.
- Beyond that, there is no financial implication for the Government until the Guarantee involved is invoked.
- Union Cabinet today gave its approval to a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme named Scheme for Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises for the Unorganized Sector on All India basis with an outlay of Rs. 10 thousand crore.

- Important Note : The expenditure will be shared by Centre and the States in ratio of 60:40.
- Objectives of the scheme :

- To increase in access to finance by micro food processing units.
- Increase in revenues of target enterprises, enhanced compliance with food quality and safety standards.
- Strengthening capacities of support systems and transition from the unorganized sector to the formal sector.
- Special focus on women entrepreneurs and aspirational districts.
- Encourage Waste to Wealth activities and focus on minor forest produce in tribal districts.
- 15th Finance Commission has reconvened its high level group on Health Sector.

- The decision comes in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessity to formulate the way ahead to handle similar health challenges in the country.
- The high level group, which is headed by Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi Dr. Randeep Guleria, will also now have Dr. S K Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences and Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Founder of Mahajan Imaging.
- The high level group of the Finance Commission will review its original recommendations in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
- It will also reassess the requirement of health manpower and estimated requirement of resources for the next five years in the country.
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has taken up the Complete Solarisation of Konark sun temple and Konark town in Odisha.

- The Government of India launched the Scheme with an objective to take forward the Prime Minister’s vision to develop the historical Sun temple town of Konark in Odisha as 'Surya Nagri', to convey a message of synergy between the modern use of solar energy and the ancient Sun Temple and the importance of promoting solar energy..
- The Scheme will meet all the energy requirements of Konark town with solar energy.
- The Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is reportedly set to take charge as the Chairman of the WHO Executive Board on May 22.

- Vardhan would replace Japan's Hiroki Nakatani.
- Haryana Government today announced that under the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs for containment of COVID-19, all Sports Complexes and Stadiums in the state have been permitted to open.
