International Current Affairs
  • Today (18th May 2020) is the International Museum Day.
    • This day is observed every year to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society.
    • Theme of International Museum Day 2020 : "Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion"
  • India is among 62 countries that have moved a proposal at the World Health Assembly to "identify the zoonotic source" of coronavirus
    • The countries have also asked for an "impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation" to review experience gained and lessons learned from the WHO-coordinated international health response to COVID-19. 
    • The proposal is part of a seven-page draft resolution.
  • Cyclone Amphan, that has been circling over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify further into a "super cyclonic storm" in the next 12 hours, the IMD said. 
    • In Odisha, Amphan is likely to trigger heavy rainfall in some parts from today onwards. 
  • Israel's parliament has approved PM Benjamin Netanyahu's new unity government with former rival Benny Gantz, ending over a year of political deadlock after three inconclusive elections. 
    • Netanyahu will be the PM for 18 months before handing over to Gantz. 
    • The new government was ratified by 73 of 120 members of the Israeli parliament.
  • Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah signed a power-sharing deal to end a months-long political stalemate.
    • Abdullah would lead the council for peace talks with the Taliban and his team members would be included in cabinet.
National Current Affairs
  • As many as 5,242 coronavirus cases were confirmed in India in the last 24 hours, marking the biggest one-day jump so far and taking the total number of cases to 96,169
    • Meanwhile, 157 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,029. Out of the total cases, 56,316 cases are active.
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today took oath as Member of Legislative Council (MLC) along with eight others who were elected unopposed to the state's Upper House on May 14. 
    • Besides the CM, Shiv Sena's Neelam Gorhe, NCP's Shashikant Shinde, Amol Mitkari, Congress's Rajesh Rathod and BJP's Gopichand Padalkar, Pravin Datke, Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil and Ramesh Karad were elected MLCs.

Science & Technology
  • The US Space Force has conducted the 6th successful launch of its unmanned 'secretive' space plane, named "X-37B". 
    • It was launched aboard the "Atlas V" rocket built by a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed, and carries a written dedication to those affected by COVID-19 and frontline workers. 
    • Its mission or the time it'll spend in orbit hasn't been revealed.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Japan's economy (world's 3rd-biggest economy) has slipped into recession amid the coronavirus crisis
    • The shrank 3.4% in the first three months of 2020 compared to a year ago, its biggest slump since 2015. 
    • Note : Japan didn't go into full national lockdown but issued a state of emergency in April severely affecting supply chains and businesses in the trade-reliant nation.
  • Dyson Founder James Dyson has become UK's richest person after adding £3.6 billion to his wealth, growing to £16.2 billion, as per Sunday Times Rich List.
    • Hinduja Group's Sri and Gopi Hinduja and family were placed in the 2nd position with £16 billion wealth. 

Recent Committees in News
  • Government has accepted and implemented 3 important recommendations of Committee of Experts (CoE) under the Chairmanship of Lt General D B Shekatkar (Retd) relating to border Infrastructure
    • These were related to speeding up road construction, leading to socio economic development in the border areas.

Sports Current Affairs
  • The All India Tennis Association (AITA) is set to nominate India's top-ranked women's singles player Ankita Raina and 2018 Asian Games doubles gold medallist Divij Sharan for Arjuna Awards
    • The national tennis federation is also planning to nominate former Davis Cup coach Nandan Bal who won two ATP titles in the 2019 season, for the Dhyan Chand Award.
