- World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day is being observed today.

- This day is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
- The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995.
- Important Points to Note :

- Kuala Lumpur chosen as the World Book Capital 2020.
- Sharjah was World Book Capital for the year 2019.
- Today (23rd April) is UN English Language Day.

- The event was established by the UNESCO in 2010.
- April 23 was chosen as the date for the English language because it is the birth anniversary of greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist William Shakespeare.
- The US has suspended the export of nuclear byproducts under a blanket general licensing system to Pakistan.

- The order said that suspending byproduct material exports to Pakistan is necessary to enhance the defense and security of the US.
- Two pet cats in New York have tested COVID-19 positive, marking the 1st confirmed cases in pets in the US.

- Note : In a first, a Tiger (named 'Nadia') at New York's Bronx Zoo has tested positive for Covid-19 on 7th April.
- India has sent 23 tonnes of essential medicines, including 3.2 lakh doses of Paracetamol and 2.5 lakh doses of Hydroxychloroquine, to Nepal to fight coronavirus pandemic.

- Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli thanked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for the "generous support".
- The US has cancelled the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the 1st time since World War II due to coronavirus pandemic.

- The competition will return on June 1, 2021 but those who are in eighth grade this year will miss their last chance to win.
- The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed the 20,000-mark on Wednesday, 7 days after the cases had breached the 10,000-mark.

- The cases had crossed the 15,000 mark on 19th April.
- Further, it had taken six days for the cases to cross the 10,000-mark from 5,000.
- Important Note : India's first case of coronavirus was confirmed on January 30.
- The Union Home Ministry today allowed opening of shops selling school books and electric fans, services of bedside attendants of senior citizens and public utilities, including recharge facilities for prepaid mobile phones during the ongoing lockdown.

- The Home Ministry also said bread factories and flour mills located in urban areas can restart operations during the ongoing lockdown.
- President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent for promulgation of the Ordinance to amend the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

- This ordinance provides for making acts of violence cognizable and non-bailable offences.
- It also has provision for compensation in cases of injury to healthcare service professionals or damage to their property.
- Note : The Union Cabinet had approved the ordinance on this matter yesterday taking cognizance of few recent instances of attacks on health care personnel.
- Unique and first of its kind facility in the country, a Mobile Virology Diagnostics and Research Laboratory has been inaugurated in Hyderabad at the ESI medical college.

- Developed by the DRDO, the Bio safety level-3 laboratory can test thousand samples for Corona virus daily and can scale up to 2000 in future.
- The laboratory also has a facility to trial drugs and conduct research on Corona virus.
- Germany's vaccines regulator approved the country's 1st human trials of a potential COVID-19 vaccine being developed by German biotech company BioNTech and its American partner Pfizer.

- The trial will be conducted in two stages.
- The first stage will involve 200 healthy people aged between 18 and 55 and the second stage will involve people at higher risk from the disease.
- Remittances to India may decline by 23% to $64 billion in 2020 from previous year's $83 billion due to coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank announced today.

- Global remittances may fall about 20% due to the economic crisis induced by coronavirus, it added.
- Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani overtook Jack Ma as Asia's richest person with a $49.2 billion fortune following the Facebook-Jio deal, as per Bloomberg.

- Ambani and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg added $4.7 billion and $4.2 billion to their respective net worths as shares of their companies surged.
- Note : Yesterday, Facebook has announced that it will buy 10% of Jio Platforms for $5.7 billion.
- IIT-Kharagpur was ranked the most impactful Indian institute and 57th globally in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020 out of over 766 universities from 89 countries and regions.

- University of Auckland topped the list followed by University of Sydney and Western Sydney University.
- Ethiopia's 55-year-old microbiologist, Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

- He was elected for a 5-year term in 2017.
- Prior to his election at WHO, he served as Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012–2016 and Minister of Health from 2005–2012.
- He holds a PhD in Community Health and MSc in Immunology of Infectious Diseases.
