International Current Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind is visiting Switzerland as part of his 3 nation tour to Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia.
    • During this visit, he met the President and the Federal Council members of Switzerland.
    • Indian stance on Kashmir and automatic sharing of Bank account details in Switzerland are some of the issues that came up during the high level meetings.
    • Note : Switzerland is in favour of clean financial dealings and extending all cooperation to India.
    • President also inaugurated a Bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Villeneuve in Switzerland.
    • The bust was unveiled to mark the visit of Mahatma to Villeneuve in 1931.
    • The inauguration also coincides with 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the nation.
    • The idol was sculpted by : Ram Vanaji Sutar 
  • The 14th Conference of Parties (COP-14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) came to a close with the adoption of the Delhi Declaration.
    • During the extensive deliberations that lasted for 12 days, COP-14 witnessed widespread participation from over 9,000 participants from across the globe at Greater Noida.
    • In Delhi Declaration, the parties expressed support for new initiatives aiming to improve human health and well-being, the health of ecosystems and to advance peace and security.
  • A high-level delegation from Poland is on a two-day visit of Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
    • They held a meeting under the chairmanship Member of Parliament from Kolhapur, Yuvraj Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati at Kolhapur.
    • Both sides discussed the possibilities of bilateral trade in food processing, silver, and leather sectors.
    • Feasibility of possible air connection with Poland from Pune and to set up a joint business forum between the two countries was also explored. 
    • India and Poland have affirmed to give further fillip to the trade ties between the two countries. 
  • The 6th India-China Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), concluded in New Delhi today.
    • Both the sides agreed that SED has emerged as a crucial mechanism to facilitate bilateral trade, investment and enhance economic cooperation.
    • The Indian side was led by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman, Dr. Rajiv Kumar and the Chinese side by He Lifeng, Chairman, NDRC. 
    • During his intervention, Dr. Rajiv Kumar emphasized on taking concrete steps to address India’s trade imbalance with China.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (14th September) is Hindi Diwas (Hindi Day).
    • This day serves to propagate the Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values.
    • Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14 September because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India.
    • Hindi got its name from the Persian word Hind, meaning 'Land of the Indus River'.
    • Hindi is spoken as a native language by 258 million people and is recognized as the 2nd largest language in the world.
    • At the state level, Hindi is the official language of the following Indian states : 
      • Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has decided that the Chief Minister and other state ministers will pay their own income taxes, ending the around 38-year-old practice of state government doing so. 
  • The Indian Government is launching a major programme offering 1000 PhD Fellowships to ASEAN students at IITs in India.
    • The admission portal for the programme is being executed by IIT Delhi.
    • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will launch the programme in New Delhi on 16th of this month.
  • To mark the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17th of this month, BJP President and Home Minister Amit Shah today launched a week-long programme 'Seva Saptah'. 
    • During the week-long programme, BJP leaders and workers will organize blood donation and health camps and also visit hospitals and orphanages to provide help and relief to patients. 
    • 3 pledges will also be administrated among the people related to Swachata Abhiyan, Save water and Shunning single use plastic.
  • Union Minister for Environment and Forest and Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar flagged off a Jaldoot vehicle in a function organized at Collector Office in Pune today. 
    • The van carrying the 'SAVE WATER' message will travel to different parts of the state.
Awards & Honors
  • 5 Indian women police officers were honoured by the United Nations with UN Medal for their commendable services in UN mission in South Sudan
    • They are :
      • Reena Yadav - Inspector, Chandigarh Police
      • Gopika Jahagirdar - DSP, Maharashtra Police
      • Bharati Samantray - DSP in the Ministry of Home Affairs
      • Ragini Kumari - Inspector in the Ministry of Home Affairs
      • Kamal Shekhawat - ASP, Rajasthan Police
    • Note : The women officers were honoured by the United Nation for upholding the UN mandate of protection of civilians in conflict-ridden South Sudan. 
  • An innovative project for constructing a floating school for marginalised children in Bangladesh has been awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Architecture Award 2019.
    • The project involved the construction of a school in an area which is underwater during the monsoon months.
    • The architect of the project Saif Ul Haque designed a school which remains on the ground during the dry season and floats when the area is submerged in water during monsoon.
    • The award was given away yesterday in Kajan, the republic of Tatarstan for the Arcadia Education Project in South Kanarchor of Bangladesh.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the scheme for Remission of Duties or Taxes on Export Product (RoDTEP) will replace the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme
    • She said the new scheme will more than adequately incentivise exporters than existing schemes put together. 
    • Sitharaman added the revenue foregone from the scheme has been projected at up to ₹50,000 crore.
  • Sitharaman also announced that India will organise an annual mega shopping festival in four places across the country in March 2020 to promote exports.
    • The shopping festival will be on the lines of Dubai Shopping Festival.
    • It will focus on 4 themes — Gems and Jewellery, Handicraft / Yoga / Tourism, Textiles, and Leather.
  • The recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission for West Bengal Government Employees will come into effect from January 1 next year.
    • As per Recommendations of the Pay Commission, the Minimum Gross Pay of an Employee will stand at 20 thousand 146 rupees.
    • The Government also accepted the recommendations for hiking the ceiling of Gratuity from 6 lakh to 10 lakh rupees. Ms. Banerjee also announced the merger of Dearness Allowance with new Pay Bands.
Deaths
  • Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella's father and former IAS officer BN Yugandhar (80) passed away.
    • Yugandhar was an IAS officer of 1962 batch and had served as Planning Commission member during Manmohan Singh's tenure as PM. 
    • He had also served as director of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
New Appointments
  • Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today appointed new foreign and defence ministers and appointed a rising political star as environment minister.

    • Kono Taro : Defence minister
