Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP): Highlights
  • Launch Date: 5th January 2015 (revised on January 2019)
  • Launched by: Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Renewable Energy, R K Singh
  • Implemented by: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)
  • Purpose: To promote energy efficiency in the country by replacing 3.5 crore conventional street lights with energy-efficient LED lights and to reduce 15 lakh tons of CO2.

Key feature:

  • Under this programme, over 3.5 crore conventional street lights have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lights which would results a huge amount of energy-saving around 900 crore units and cost-saving of INR Rs 5,500 crore in every year.
  • Now the target under this programme is to replace 1.34 crore conventional street lights with energy-efficient LED street lights by March 2019.

Facts:

  • This SLNP programme has also some other benefits:
    • It will reduce climate change by implementing energy-efficient LED-based street lighting.
    • Reduce energy consumption in lighting which helps DISCOMs to handle the peak demand.
    • It will furnish a sustainable service model which reduces the need for upfront capital investment as well as generates additional revenue to pay for the procurement of LED lights.
    • Also, it will enhance the municipal services.
