International Current Affairs
  • Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the country will ban harmful single-use plastics like plastic bags, straws, among other items, as early as 2021.
    • Canada plans to introduce targets and standards for firms that manufacture plastic products or sell items with plastic packaging so they become responsible for their plastic waste.
  • Humans may be ingesting 5 grams of plastic each week, the equivalent of a credit card, a study commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature announced. 
    • The largest source of plastic ingestion is drinking water, with the plastic particles found in bottled, tap, surface and groundwater. 
    • The findings are the first to estimate the ingestion of microplastics by humans.
  • UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid has signed a request for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be extradited to the US. 
    • Assange is accused of obtaining and publishing classified information and conspiring to hack into a government computer.
National Current Affairs
  • Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has announced that the Centre will extend free coaching to Muslim girls preparing for UPSC, banking and state service exams
    • He further announced that the government will provide 100% funding to build schools, colleges, hospitals, community centres, common centres, and hostels on Waqf properties, which will be geo-tagged and digitised.
  • The Karnataka government has announced that it will waive all eligible farm loans in one go. 
    • Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, has announced that loans of 2,28,961 farmers amounting to ₹4,617.31 crore will be released in a single phase across the state. 
  • A team of scientists including Delhi University researchers discovered a new species of 'paddy frog' in Assam
    • The frog 'Micryletta aishani' was named after the Sanskrit word 'aishani', meaning northeast, in reference to Northeast India. 
    • The new frog is reddish-brown in colour and measures about 2.2-2.8 cm in length and has an absence of web on its feet.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir for another 6 months, beginning from July 3.
    • Note : J&K has been under President's rule since December 2018. 
    • Earlier, the state was under Governor's rule after the BJP pulled out of the coalition government with PDP in June last year.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Over 53,000 cases of bank frauds worth ₹2.05 lakh crore were reported in India between 2008-09 and 2018-19, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently revealed. 
    • The highest of 6,811 cases were reported by the ICICI Bank involving ₹5,034 crore. 
    • This was followed by the State Bank of India (SBI) which reported 6,793 cases worth ₹23,735 crore.
  • American multinational computer technology company Dell has emerged as the most trusted brand of India in 2019, according to a research by TRA's The Brand Trust Report. 
    • Dell climbed five ranks over the previous year to grab the top spot and also introduced the laptop category in the report.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Bimal Jalan committee, which is reviewing the size of capital reserves the RBI should hold, delayed submitting its report again today due to a difference of opinion.
    • Originally scheduled for submission in April, the report will now be submitted by June-end. 
    • The 6-member panel will have one more meeting before finalising its report.
Awards & Honors
  • Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan will be the chief guest at the 10th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in Australia.  
    • The film festival will be held between August 8 and August 17 this year.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University has approved a proposal to give Distinguished Alumni Award to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during convocation in August. 
    • Sitharaman did her Masters in Economics and MPhil in International Studies from JNU, while Jaishankar did Masters in Political Science and MPhil and PhD in International Relations from the university.
Science & Technology
  • The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) K Sivan today announced that  India is planning to set up a separate station in space.
  • The Central Government has approved the formation of Defence Space Research Agency (DSRO) to develop weapon systems and capability enhancing technologies for space wars. 
    • The DSRO will reportedly comprise scientists who'll work with integrated officers of the three armed forces. 
    • Separate military agency Defence Space Agency (DSA) was also reportedly set up to fight any future space wars.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-Delhi) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Navy to train its officials in Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • The officers will be allowed to pursue MTech AI from the institute as regular students. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Team India captain Virat Kohli is the sole Indian and the only cricketer in the Forbes 2019 list of world's highest-paid athletes with estimated annual earnings of $25 million (₹173 crore). 
    • The list is topped by Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi.
