As we know, Independence day is celebrated to commemorating the nation's independence from the British rule on 15 August 1947. Republic Day is celebrated because the constitution of India was enacted on this day in 1950 and subsequently Government of India Act 1935 was replaced.
Did you know that the constitution of India was drafted on November 26, 1947 but it came into effect on 26th January 1950 with the formation of a democratic system? In the year 1929, during the lahore session in December Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as president and congress finally voted for Purna Swaraj (complete independence) and it was proposed that the last Sunday of January 1930 would be celebrated as Independence day which fell on 26. On that day Pt. Nehru hoisted the Tricolour at bank of Ravi river at Lahore and we celebrated our first Independence day but the Britishers were still around and it wasn't a complete independence.
70th Republic Day: 26th January 2019
On Republic Day, flag hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held in different parts of the country. The grandest and most important of these parades is held at Rajpath in New Delhi, which showcases a multi-hued image of the country's rich cultural heritage and military prowess.This parade is presided over by the President of India who is the being the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. Awards such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and Vir Chakra are presented to gallantry award winners.
Cyril Ramaphosa was invited by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during the G20 summit which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was especially chosen for this occasion because India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who had very close association with the people of South Africa. Moreover, both India and South Africa are the part of Non Aligned Movement in which newly independent countries united in a common struggle against colonialism, discrimination etc.

Significance of 70th Republic Day 2019
- 150th birth anniversary of ‘Father of the Nation’:
The 2019 celebration will be special as this year will mark the 150th birth anniversary of ‘Father of the Nation’. Many tableaux from different states and UTs will be displayed in the parade based on the theme ‘Gandhi’. Moreover, a tableau will also showcase ‘Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth’ which is a historical educational institution situated in Varanasi.
- All-Women Assam Rifles Contingent To Make History On Republic Day:
It will be the first time in history that all women contingent of Assam Rifles, which is one of the oldest paramilitary forces of India, will take part in the Republic Day parade this year. Major Khushboo Kanwar, 30, will lead a contingent of the Assam Rifles. It will also be the first time that a woman officer would be leading the Army Services Corps in the 2019 Republic Day parade. Captain Shikha Surabhi from the Corps of Signals, will perform bike stunts alongside her team mates.
- IAF To Fly Biofuel-Driven Aircraft At Republic Day Parade:
This year, IAF will be flying an aircraft which will run by blended bio-fuel on the Republic Day 2019 fly-past. The aircraft will fly over Rajpath with a ‘V’ shape formation resembling ‘Victory’ sign. This will play a crucial role in reduction of carbon footprint and dependence on aviation fuel imports. Republic Day Parade 2019 will also witness the inclusion of M777 Howitzer and K9 Vajra, the self propelled gun which are recently inducted in the Indian Army.
