International Current Affairs
  • Palestine has taken over the chairmanship of G77 (Group of 77) from Egypt. 
    • Important Points to Note
      • G77 is a coalition of 134 developing nations at the United Nations. 
      • G77 was formed on 15 June 1964 by the “Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries” issued at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
      • The chairmanship of the G77 is based on the system of geographical rotation. 
      • 2019 was Asia’s turn and the Asian group had unanimously endorsed Palestine. Egypt was representing the African Group of countries.
  • The United States will begin the process of the withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty on February 2. 
    • The US' announcement came after it rejected an offer to inspect a new Russian missile that it claims violates the Cold War-era treaty.
    • The INF treaty required the elimination of both US' and Russia's land-based nuclear missiles from Europe.
National Current Affairs
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today inaugurated the Diffo Bridge over Chipu River in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh, .
    • The bridge is 426 mts in length and its work started in 2011.
  • Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today launched a project for Sustainable Catchment Forest Management (SCATFORM) at State Forest Academy Ground in Hatipara in West Tripura.
    • The SCATFORM project aims to address issues such as forest cover loss and forest degradation have been mainly caused by shifting cultivation, which increases soil erosion risks on hill slopes especially in upper catchment areas.
    • The project is jointly funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Government of India.
    • The project would help develop the quality of forestlands and livelihood of forest dwellers in the state.
  • Government has sanctioned 3 new Naval Air Squadrons to be set up in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu
    • Besides this, the Central Government has also sanctioned manpower towards manning additional aircraft in existing Dornier Surveillance Squadrons in Kerala and Andaman Islands.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is organising Shehri Samridhi Utsav, a fortnight of events all over India focusing on urban livelihoods.
    • The event will begin on 1st February and continue till 15th. 
      • Aim of Shehri Samridhi Utsav : Extending the outreach of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) to the poorest of  poor and the most vulnerable.

  • Kolkata based Indian Mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta, climbed Antarctica's highest point, Mount Sidley, to become the youngest man in the world to have climbed the 7 highest volcanic peaks.
    • He has set the world record of youngest to climb 7 highest volcanoes, 7 highest mountains in 7 continents in 7 years. 
    • He is also the 1st Indian to conquer the seven mountain peaks and seven volcanic summits.
Awards & Honors
  • The Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar has announced the Shaurya awards for students.
    • These awards with prize money of Rs 11,000 will be awarded to students in the name of 71 personnel of the state police forces who laid down their lives while protecting society and maintaining law and order in the state.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To mark the 102nd birth anniversary of Former Tamil Nadu CM DR M G Ramachandran, the state government today released 2 commemorative coins in the denominations of Rs 100 and Rs 5
    • The commemorative coins bear the portrait of Ramachandran at the centre along with the inscription ‘DR M G Ramachandran Birth Centenary’ on the lower periphery.
  • Union Cabinet has approved tripling the capacity of Numaligarh Refinery of Assam, from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA at a cost of ₹22,594 crore. 
    • This also includes setting up an oil pipeline from Paradip to Numaligarh and product pipeline from Numaligarh to Siliguri. 
    • The project aims to meet demand for petroleum products in Northeast India.
New Appointments
  • Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has been elected for a second term, ending a four-month political vacuum. 
    • He is expected to formally present his new government and its full programme on Monday. 
  • Former Agriculture Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi senior leader Pocharam Srinivas Reddy has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the newly constituted Telangana state Assembly.
  • As per the recommendations of the Appointments Committee of the cabinet, President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed senior advocates Sanjay Jain and K M Nataraj as Additional Solicitor Generals of India
Sports Current Affairs
  • Ace Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has become the 1st Indian athlete to receive a nomination in the prestigious Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award.
    • She has been nominated alongside US Tour Championship winner Tiger Woods, who won his first tournament in five years.  
    • Note : The Awards will be presented in Monaco on 18th February 2019.
  • Kerala defeated Gujarat by 113 runs to qualify for the Ranji Trophy semi-finals for the first time in their 61-year history. 
    • Kerala fast bowler Basil Thampi emerged as the Man of the Match with eight wickets in the match.
  • Indian professional badminton singles player Saina Nehwal registered a straight-game win over former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan to enter the women's singles semifinals of the $350,000 Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur today. 
    • She will next face three-time world champion and Rio 2016 gold-winner Carolina Marin of Spain tomorrow.
