- Heartland - the central part of a country
- Enthuse - to make someone interested in something or excited by it
- Run-up - to make something very quickly
- Wilderness - a period of time when you are not as successful as you were previously
- Cheer - if you are cheered by something such as a piece of news, it makes you happier or less worried
- Creditable - deserving praise, trust, or respect
- Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
- Gear up - to prepare yourself, or to prepare something for an activity or event
- Probably - used for saying that you think something is likely to be true or likely to happen
- Exceed (someone’s) expectations - to be much bigger or better than expected
- Massive - very large or heavy
- On an even keel - operating or happening without problems
- Gauge - to make a judgment or guess about a situation, action, or person based on the information that you have
- Breast the tape - win a race

- Play out - to develop or end in a particular way
- Infuse - to develop or end in a particular way
- Take the sting out of something - to make something less unpleasant
- Best - to gain an advantage over or defeat an opponent
- Regional - local
- Broad - including many different things or people
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Put together - to produce or organize something using many different things
- Indeed - used for adding a statement that supports and increases the effect of what you have just said
- Polarise - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
- Neighbouring - near each other
- Vacillation - to keep changing your ideas about something
- Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
- Rallying point - a place, event, or person that people are attracted to as a symbol of a political group or ideal
- Significantly - by a large amount, or in a way that is easily noticeable
- Tally - a record of the number of things that someone has done, won, or achieved
- Pitiful - looking or sounding so unhappy that you feel sympathy and sadness

- Recompense - payment that you give to someone who has suffered injury or loss because of you
- Massive - very large or heavy
- Erosion - the gradual reduction or destruction of something important

- Citadel - a place that seems to represent all the important aspects of an idea, method, or practice
- Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
- Chunk - a large amount or part of something
- Incumbency - an official position
- Deny - to say that something is not true or does not exist
- Overwhelmingly - used for emphasizing the amount or strength of something
- Dramatic - sudden and surprising or easy to notice
- Although - used for introducing a statement that makes your main statement seem surprising
- By-elections - an election in one particular area to choose a new representative in parliament or on a council, or to replace someone who has died or left the job
- Riding high - having a period of success
- Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
- Sub-par - below a normal or expected level
- Setback - a problem that delays or that stops progress or makes a situation worse
- Incumbent - someone who has an official position
- Conceding - to admit that something is true
- Substantial - large in amount or degree
- Solace - something that makes you feel better when you are sad or upset
- Minuscule - extremely small in size or amount
- Embrace - to accept and include something
- Spoiler - something that is produced to compete with something else and make it less successful
- Introspect - reflect on one's own thoughts and feelings
- Intangible - not able to be touched or measured, and difficult to describe or explain
- Survive - to continue to exist, especially in a difficult or dangerous situation
- Potent - powerful, effective
- Rural - relating to the countryside, or in the countryside
- Distress - a feeling that you have when you are very unhappy, worried, or upset
- Urban - relating to towns and cities, or happening there
- Angst - a strong feeling of worry about what you should do, how you should behave, or what will happen in the future
- Disproportionate - if something is disproportionate, it is bigger or smaller than it should be in comparison to something else
- Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
- Handicap - a disadvantage that prevents you from doing something well
- Straitjacket - something that limits someone’s freedom to do something
- Aggressive - behaving in an angry or rude way that shows you want to fight, attack, or argue with someone
- Vigilantism - attempts by ordinary citizens to catch and punish criminals, without waiting for the police
- Livelihood - something such as your work that provides the money that you need to live
- Intent - the intention to do something
- Exception - someone or something that is different in some way from other people or things and so cannot be included in a general statement
