Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Defusing tensions: on CBI feud"
- Defusing - to make a situation more relaxed by making people feel less angry or less worried
- Feud - an angry disagreement between two people or groups that continues for a long time
- Interim - temporary and intended to be used or accepted until something permanent exists
- Pave the way - if something paves the way for/to something else, it makes the other thing possible
- Resolution - the action of solving a problem or dealing with a disagreement in a satisfactory way
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Supervise - to watch a person or activity to make certain that everything is done correctly, safely, etc
- Inquiry - an official examination of a crime, accident, problem etc, in order to get information or the truth
- Charge - an official statement accusing someone of committing a crime
- Sideline - to prevent someone from being involved in something that they would normally expect to be involved in
- Agency - a government department, or an organization connected with a government, that deals with a particular subject
- Vigilance - more careful attention, especially in order to notice possible danger
- Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
- Non-cooperation - a policy of not doing the things that someone wants you to do, especially as a type of protest
- Divesting - to take away someone’s power, rights, or authority
- Suspicion - a feeling that someone has done something wrong
- Interfering - deliberately involving yourself in other people’s lives and trying to influence the way that they behave, although you have no right to do this
- Writ - an official document that tells someone to do something or to stop doing something
- Legality - the fact that something is legal
- Probe - an attempt to find out the truth about an issue, problem, or accident, made by an official group or by a newspaper, television programme etc
- Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
- Supervise - to be in charge of an activity or a place and to check that things are done correctly
- Statutory - controlled by a law or statute
- Superintend - to be in charge of an activity or job and to check that it is done correctly
- Exception - someone or something that is not included in a rule, group, or list or that does not behave in the expected way
- Peculiar - strange, often in an unpleasant way
- Compound - something consisting of two or more different parts
- Far-reaching - affecting a lot of people or things in an important way
- Confine - to keep an activity within particular limits
- Safeguard - to protect something or someone from being harmed or having problems
- Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
- Pendency - the state or time of being pending
- Resolution - the action of solving a problem or dealing with a disagreement in a satisfactory way
- Petition - an official document in which you ask a court to take legal action
- Stripping - to take something away using force or authority
- Adjudication - the act of judging a case, competition, or argument, or of making a formal decision about something
- Quieten - to become less noisy, active, or busy, or to make someone or something less noisy, active, or busy
- Suspicion - a feeling that someone has done something wrong
- Mounting - increasing, especially in a way that makes a situation worse
- Surveillance - the process of carefully watching a person or place that may be involved in a criminal activity
- Unease - a feeling of being nervous, uncomfortable, or unhappy about a situation
- Distrust - to not trust someone or something
- Recrimination - a situation in which people are accusing or criticizing each other

- Touching base - to communicate with someone that you have not seen for some time in order to find out how they are, what is happening etc
- Institutionalise - to give something a formal or official structure

- Notably - especially: used for introducing a good example of something

- Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
- Multilateral - involving three or more groups, especially the governments of three or more countries
- Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
- Impact - to have an effect or influence on someone or something
- Defence - the system of weapons, equipment, and people that is used to protect a country
- Pose - to present a difficult or dangerous situation
- Looming - (of something unwanted or unpleasant) about to happen soon and causing worry
- Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
- Corral - to move people into a place and stop them from leaving it
- On-again, off-again - not happening continuously; starting and stopping repeatedly
- Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
- Tenterhooks - nervous because you do not know what is going to happen
- Trilateral - involving three countries or organizations
- Quadrilateral - involving four countries or organizations
- Corridor - used about an area of land that belongs to one country but is surrounded by another
- Bilateral - a bilateral agreement or activity is one that involves two groups or countries
- Loose end - the final details or parts of something that you have not yet completed or dealt with
- Tranche - a part of an amount or total, especially a sum of money
- Acquisition - the process of buying something or obtaining it in some other way
- Landmark - a major event or achievement that marks an important stage in a process and makes progress possible
- Amphibian - a vehicle or aircraft that can operate both on water and on land
- Several-fold - a number of times as big or as much
- Insurmountable - impossible to deal with successfully
- Uncharted - not shown on any map
- Stormy - with a lot of rain and strong winds
- Terrain - an area of land, usually one that has a particular physical feature
