- Today (1st October) is World Vegetarian Day.

- It is a day of celebration established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism."
- Today (1st October) is International Day of Older Persons.

- Theme of International Day of Older Persons 2018 : “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions.”
- Communist revolutionary Mao Zedong officially proclaimed the existence of the People's Republic of China on this day (1st October) in the year 1949.

- Mao's proclamation came after the end of the civil war fought between the Kuomintang (KMT)-led nationalist government and the Communist Party of China (CPC).
- Macedonia held a referendum on whether to change its name to the 'Republic of North Macedonia'.

- Greece and Macedonia had signed a deal in this regard in June.
- Greece argued that the name 'Macedonia' implied a territorial claim on its own province of the same name and had thus vetoed Macedonia's entry into the NATO and European Union.
- United States and Morocco have launched GCTF Terrorist Travel Initiative under auspices of Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF).

- The initiative brings together stakeholders to share expertise on developing and implementing effective counterterrorism watchlisting and screening tools.
- It was launched on sidelines of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York.
National Current Affairs
- Today (1st October) is National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

- The objective of this day is to share the need and importance of the blood in the life of an individual.
- This day was first observed in the year 1975 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology.
- President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professional (Protection and Regulation during Emergency Situations) Bill, 2016.

- This law will ensure that good samaritans are not harassed in any manner and face any criminal or civil liability while helping accident victims.
- With this, Karnataka became first state give legal protection to good Samaritans who help accidents victims with emergency medical care within golden hour.
- The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is going to establish India’s first AICTE Training And Learning (ATAL) Academy in Jaipur (Rajasthan).

- Moreover, tree more ATAL academies will come at Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Guwahati (Assam) and Baroda (Gujarat) by next year.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has allowed the government to take control of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) by replacing all its board members.

- Uday Kotak (Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank) and G C Chaturvedi (ICICI Bank Chairman) are part of a new 6-member board that will prepare a turnaround plan.
- Note : IL&FS Group, with a debt of over ₹91,000 crore, recently defaulted on multiple obligations.
- The United States and Canada today confirmed they had reached a deal on a "new, modernised trade agreement", which is designed to replace the 1994 NAFTA pact.

- The two nations said the new deal would be called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

- Late actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor's wife Krishna Raj Kapoor (87) passed away.

- She was the grandmother of Ranbir, Kareena and Karisma Kapoor.
Awards & Honors
- The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.”
- Cancer kills millions of people every year and is one of humanity’s greatest health challenges. By stimulating the inherent ability of our immune system to attack tumour cells this year’s Nobel Laureates have established an entirely new principle for cancer therapy.
- The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to James Allison (America) and Tasuku Honjo (japan).

- They are being honored with this prestigious award "for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation".
- The discovery made by the two Medicine Laureates takes advantage of the immune system's ability to attack cancer cells by releasing the "brakes" on immune cells.
Sports Current Affairs
- After scoring 87 runs and taking 10 wickets in Asia Cup, Afghanistan's 20-year-old cricketer Rashid Khan has become the top-ranked all-rounder in ODI cricket, as per the latest ICC rankings.

- Rashid has played 52 ODIs so far, scoring 676 runs at an average of 21.80 and taking 118 wickets at 14.47.
- Important Note : Rashid is the top-ranked T20I bowler as well.
