- Sooner - earlier than expected
- Later - at some time in the future, or after the time that you have been talking about
- Regional - relating to or typical of a particular area of a country or the world
- Uncoupling - to separate two things that are joined together
- Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
- Circumstances - a fact or condition that affects a situation
- Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
- Stitch together - to create or form something quickly or roughly
- So-called - used for showing that you think a word used for describing someone or something is not suitable
- Federal - connected with the national government of a country rather than with the government of one of its member states

- Principal - main, or most important
- Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
- Term - a period of time during which a politician or other official holds their job
- Plank - an important aspect of something, on which it is based
- Rally - a public meeting that a lot of people go to in order to support someone or something or to protest against someone or something
- Theme - the main subject of something such as a book, speech, art exhibition, or discussion
- Exhortation - to try to persuade someone to do something
- Regionalism - a political policy that supports the division of a country into smaller areas that govern themselves
- Ideology - a system of ideas and principles on which a political or economic theory is based
- Dissolution - the process of officially ending the existence of a group or organization
- Oblige - to force someone to do something because it is the law, a rule, or a duty
- Clutch - to hold someone or something firmly
- Populist - representing the interests and opinions of ordinary people
- Intend - to have a plan in your mind to do something
- Cozy up to someone - to be very friendly to someone with the hope of getting an advantage
- Beat off - to succeed in winning or gaining something from an opponent
- Rejuvenate - to make something such as an organization, system, or place good or effective again
- In retrospect - considering something that happened in the past, using knowledge or information that you did not have at that time

- Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
- Major - important, serious, large, or great
- Enclave - an area of a country or city where a particular group of people live
- Speculation - ideas or discussion about why something has happened or what might happen
- Imminent - likely or certain to happen very soon
- Catastrophe - an event that causes a lot of damage or makes a lot of people suffer
- Regime - a system or form of government
- Backer - someone who gives help or money to a plan or organization
- Manoeuvre - an action or movement that you need care or skill to do
- Mediterranean - relating to the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea, the people who live there, or their culture
- Militia - a group of ordinary people who are trained as soldiers to fight in an emergency
- Jihadist - someone who is engaged in jihad (a holy war or fight that Muslims take part in to defend Islam)
- On the brink of - in a situation in which something bad is very likely to happen
- Collapse - to suddenly fail or stop existing
- Autonomy - a situation in which a state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
- Inclined - feeling that you want to do something
- Armed - carrying a weapon, especially a gun
- Rebellion - an attempt to remove a government or leader by force
- Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Formerly - in the past
- Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event
- Displace - to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
- War zone - an area where people are fighting a war
- Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
- Trigger - to make something happen
- Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
- Brute force - great physical force or strength
- Massive - very large or heavy
- Influx - a large number of people or things coming to a particular place
- Backer - someone who gives help or money to a plan or organization
- Superior - better than someone or something else in quality or skill
- Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
- Exhaust - to use all that you have of something
- Civilian - someone who does not belong to the armed forces or the police
- Envoy - an official who represents their country in another country, with a rank below an ambassador
- Mediate - to try to end a disagreement between two people or groups
- Rehabilitation - to return something to a good condition
- Bloodshed - a situation in which people are killed or injured, especially during fightingrocity - a cruel and violent act, often in a war
