Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Bail over jail: on due process"
- Due process - the correct way of dealing with a legal trial or other legal matters, that makes sure that people’s rights are protected
- Custody - a situation in which someone is kept in prison until they go to court for trial
- Remand - to tell someone who has committed a crime to return to court for trial on a particular day
- Confer - to give something such as authority, a legal right, or an honour to someone
- Discretion - the right or ability to make a judgment or decision
- Deliberation - discussions in which a subject is considered carefully
- Oppression - unfair and cruel treatment by a powerful person or government
- Harassment - annoying or unpleasant behaviour towards someone that takes place regularly
- Prosecute - to officially accuse someone of a crime and ask a court of law to judge them
- Emphasise - to make something more noticeable
- Reflexive - a reflexive movement or action is one that you do without thinking
- Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
- Offence - a crime or illegal activity for which there is a punishment
- Commission - the act of committing a crime
- Empower - to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
- Warrant - a document written by a judge that gives the police permission to do something, for example to arrest someone or to search a house
- Stringent - stringent rules or conditions are strict and make you achieve high standards
- Carry out - to do a particular piece of work
- Tampering - to touch something that you should not touch, and to change it in some way, often because you want to spoil it
- Evidence - facts or physical signs that help to prove something
- Humiliation - the unhappy and ashamed feeling that you get when something embarrassing happens
- Scar - a mark on something where it has been damaged
- Cavalier - not caring about other people’s feelings or about the seriousness of a situation
- Heavy-handed - using too much force, or not considering people’s feelings enough when dealing with a situation
- Opposing - competing against, fighting, or arguing with someone else or with each other
- Slew - a large amount or number
- Unjustified - not fair, or not based on any good reason
- Round-up - an occasion when animals or people are forced to gather together in one place
- Ironically - used for saying that a situation has developed in an unexpected and sometimes humorous way
- Let off - to give someone little or no punishment for something that they did wrong
- Disheartening - making you less confident or enthusiastic
- Accused - a specific person that is accused of a crime in a court of law
- Ecosystem - a group of businesses or business activities that affect each other and work well together
- Succeed - to achieve something that you planned to do or attempted to do
- Trump - to win or to succeed
- Empower - to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
- High-profile - often seen in public, mentioned in newspapers, or appearing on television
- Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
- Sloganeering - the use of slogans, especially by politicians who want to communicate a simple message that people will remember
- Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
- Invariably - always
- Acute - very serious or severe
- Activist - someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve political or social change, especially someone who is a member of an organization
- Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
- Unlawful - something that is unlawful is illegal, especially something that would be considered legal in a different situation
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Invoke - to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
- Customary - usual in a particular society or situation

- Cloudy - confused
- Forecast - a statement about what is likely to happen, based on available information and usually relating to the weather, business, or the economy
- Developed countries - a country with a lot of industrial activity and where people generally have high incomes
- Framework - a system of rules, laws, agreements etc that establish the way that something operates in business, politics, or society
- Convention - a formal agreement between governments of different countries about how they should behave towards each other or towards the people in their country
- Ran into - to start to have trouble/difficulty/problems etc
- Predictable - if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
- Administration - the government of a country
- Pact - an agreement between two or more people or organizations in which they promise to do something
- Pledge - to promise seriously and publicly to do something
- Emission - the act of sending out gas, heat, light, etc
- Population - all the people who live in a particular area
- Cope with - to deal successfully with a difficult situation or job
- Extreme - very great in degree
- Flood - if water floods a place, it covers it
- Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
- Storm - an occasion when a lot of rain falls very quickly, often with very strong winds or thunder and lightning
- Obstruct - to prevent someone or something from moving along or through a path, passage, door etc by blocking it
- Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
- Preserve - to take care of something in order to prevent it from being harmed or destroyed
- Status quo - the present situation, or the way that things usually are
- Short-sighted - dealing with things that are happening now but failing to consider what will happen in the future
- Detrimental - harmful or damaging
- Vulnerable - easily damaged by something negative or harmful
- Accumulate - to increase in quantity over a period of time
- Intensity - strength
- Decline - to become less or worse
- Destabilise - to cause problems for a country, government, or person in authority so that they become less effective
- Mass - a large quantity or number
- Migration - the process by which people or animals migrate to another place or country
- Panel - a group of people who make decisions or judgments
- Impact - an effect, or an influence
- Expediency - the use of methods that produce an immediate result or solution to a problem, but may not be fair or honest
- Avert - to prevent something bad or harmful from happening
- Catastrophe - an event that causes a lot of damage or makes a lot of people suffer
