Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Stooping to conquer: BJP's tact during RS Deputy Chairman election"
- Stooping - to do something bad in order to get what you want
- Conquer - to gain control of a situation or emotion by making a great physical or mental effort
- Tact - a careful way of speaking or behaving that avoids upsetting other people
- Deputy - someone whose job is the second most important in a department or organization, and who takes the responsibilities of the most important person in some situations
- Exhibit - to show a particular feeling, quality, ability, or form of behaviour
- Superior - greater in size or power
- Floor - a place where discussions or debates take place, especially in a parliament
- Ruling - in control of, or having the most power in, a country, group, or organization
- Ally - someone who is ready to help you
- Fall short - to not reach a particular level or to fail to achieve something that you were trying to do
- Majority - most of the people or things in a group
- Lacked - to not have any or enough of something that you need or want
- Ploy - a way of tricking or confusing someone in order to get an advantage or to make them do what you want
- Foe - an enemy
- Accommodate - to consider and include something when you are deciding what to do
- Reach out - to try to communicate with a person or a group of people, usually in order to help or involve them
- Equidistance - equal distance
- Prestige - the high reputation and respect that someone or something has earned, based on their impressive achievements, quality etc
- Seal a deal - to make a deal certain or complete
- Estranged - feeling that you do not belong to a group or community
- Significance - the importance that something has because it affects other things
- Stride - an important positive development
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Debating - if people debate a subject, they discuss it formally before making a decision, usually by voting
- Enjoy - to have something as a benefit or advantage
- In retrospect - considering something that happened in the past, using knowledge or information that you did not have at that time
- No-confidence vote - a voting process in which people show that they do not support a person or group in power
- Principal - main, or most important
- Pitch against - to make someone fight or compete against someone else
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Head-to-head - competing or meeting directly with someone or something else
- Stitch together - to create or form something quickly or roughly

- Cease - to stop happening or continuing
- Crowded - containing a lot of people
- Atrocity - a cruel and violent act, often in a war
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
- Excessive - much more than is reasonable or necessary
- Plunged - to make someone or something fall quickly from a high position
- Humanitarian - relating to efforts to help people who are living in very bad conditions and are suffering because of a war, flood, earthquake etc
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Port - an area of water where ships stop, including the buildings around it
- Siege - an attack in which an army surrounds a castle or city in order to prevent the people inside from receiving food and water
- Wounding - the criminal offence of injuring someone by damaging their skin or flesh, usually by using a knife or other sharp object
- Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
- Swathe - a large area of land
- Civilian - someone who does not belong to the armed forces or the police
- Toll - the total number of people who have been killed or hurt
- Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
- Backed - supported
- Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
- Displace - to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
- Invasion - an occasion when one country’s army goes into another country to take control of it by force
- Abandon - left empty or no longer used
- Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
- Outbreak - the sudden start of war, disease, violence etc
- Cut off - to stop someone from going somewhere, especially by blocking their way
- Acute - very serious or severe
- Deter - to make someone decide not to do something
- Catastrophic - causing a lot of damage, or making a lot of people suffer
- Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
- Callous - unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people
- Legitimate - fair and reasonable
- Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
- Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
- Curiously - in an unusual and interesting way
- Relentless - something bad that is relentless never seems to stop or improve
- Entrenched - entrenched attitudes or feelings have existed for a long time and are difficult to change
- Battered - old and slightly damaged
- Disastrous - causing a lot of damage or harm
- Aggression - a situation in which one country attacks another
- Condemn - to say publicly that you think someone or something is bad or wrong
- Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
- Plight - a sad, serious, or difficult situation
- Progressively - gradually and steadily
- Crown Prince - a prince who will become king after the present king or queen dies
- De facto - actual, even though not official
- Aggressive - behaving in an angry or rude way that shows you want to fight, attack, or argue with someone
- Negotiate - to try to reach an agreement by discussing something in a formal way, especially in a business or political situation
